Advantages: Blackcurrant taste makes it easy to take
Disadvantages: Results are not all that long lasting
Tixylix Baby Cough Syrup is a product that we have often used in the past to try to ease and soothe nasty coughs and colds. It seems to have been around for ages and I remember it looking and tasting pretty much the same when I used to be given it.
There do seem to be mixed thoughts these days on the effectiveness of such products with many believing they have little or no real benefit other than a very short lived soothing effect similar to cough sweets that can be taken by adults.
I have found that Tixylix has seemed to have been effective when I have administered it, but of course it does have its limitations. Nothing can take away 100% of the symptoms of a nasty cough or cold, so its something that I would recommend to a certain extent. I would also suggest that its best to consult a GP or health practitioner is you have concerns for your baby if they are experiencing a cough or cold.

The product comes in a plain white toned and red/ pink highlighted box. Inside the box is a simple bottle of the product which has a child proof cap. You get 100mls of Tixylix Baby Cough Syrup for around £2.99.
This should be given in small 5ml spoonfuls as directed by the instructions on the pack. The dosing spoon is included with the pack which is very handy and means you can get the right amount of product on the spoon.
Each 5 mls of Tixylix contains 0.75ml of glycerol which is the main ingredient within the product that can soothe a tickly and persistent cough. The other ingredients include both a blackcurrant and vanilla flavouring. The blackcurrant flavour is the one that stands out most and makes Tixylix pleasant for your baby to take.

The effects of Tixylix are fairly short lived but do soothe for a short while. You do need to watch how often you administer the product as you can only give your baby 3 to 4 doses per day, with a gap of at least 3 to 4 hours in between each dose.
Babies under 3 months cannot take Tixylix, babies 3 months to 1 year can take 1 x 5ml spoonful and children from age 1 year to 5 years may take up to 2 x 5ml spoonfuls up to 4 times per day. Tixylix has a pleasant taste and I have found that children don't mind taking it at all.

I cannot say that Tixylix is a miracle cure for tickly coughs and colds, but it does offer a short term soothing feeling that can take the edge off of the soreness and dryness that can be present with lots of coughing.
I feel that due to its short lived results the product must lose a star. However Tixylix still gets a 4 star rating as it can offer a brief respite from the burden of constant coughing, which can be very distressing and tiresome for a younger baby or toddler. This can lead to just enough of a result, to allow a poorly baby to relax and get some much needed rest.
Summary: A 4 star product
