Advantages: REPUTABLE BRAND.
Disadvantages: SHORT LIVED RELIEF FOR COUGHS.
My son suffers with a bad cough in the winter. It keeps him awake at night. He is so tired and irritable in the mornings, as he is not having a good nights rest and he is worn out from the coughing. I have therefore tried most cough medicines on the market. Tixylix baby being one of them.
Tixylix is a brand which has specialised in medicine for children for over twenty years. I remember my first job in a pharmacy and the pharmacist would always recommend this brand to worried mums with coughing children. I therefore trust this brand and was more than happy to use it when I had my own children over a decade later.
There are quite a few varieties in the Tixylix brand. Each one specifically developed for a particular cough. This Tixylix baby syprup specialises in dealing with dry and tickly coughs. It comes in a pink box which has very detailed instructions included. I found it very useful as it gives a great and easy to follow guide on the dosage, which is variable according to the age of the child. There is also a plastic medicine spoon included in the packaging.
This medicine is developed for children aged 3 months to 5 years old. Whilst I found this medicine to be useful to a degree when my son was a baby and toddler, I have to admit, I find it offers him no real comfort as he has gotten older. This medicine is gentle and soothing, however in my opinion it is quite weak in relieving troublesome coughs. Yes, there is no argument that this medicine eases the cough. But i found this respite is short lived, and in no time at all the coughing will recommence.
This syrup contains glycerol which is basically a lubricant which helps coat the back of the throat and ease any discomfort or irritation. It is glycerol that you will find in the liquid in cough sweets like soothers or tunes. Whilst this is very comforting for a child, I am not convinced that this medicine is any better than supermarket own branded cough medicine.
The taste of this medicine is quite strong. I found that my son was unhappy to take this medicine as he was not keen on the flavour. It is quite an intense and dark blackcurrant flavour. I also found that the medicine itself is quite thick and gloopy and this texture also made my son unhappy. It does however, have a lovely warming feeling when the medicine is swallowed which provides a great sense of relief for my son.
I notice that when the medicine is first taken it works quickly to ease the cough. This is helpful as it allows my son to have a short rest. However, I found this is very short lived and within ten minutes he is coughing again.
I spoke to my mother in law about this and she suggested trying Asdas own tickly cough medicine. I have to say in I did and I have never looked back. I think the Tixylix baby syrup comes in a poor second when compared to this Asda medicine which is much cheaper in cost. This is just my opinion of course. But I found when compared to asda branded medicine this Tixylix seemed to be much less effective and alot more expensive.
Tixylix is available from chemist and supermarkets. It costs around £3 for a 100ml bottle, from my local chemist. Which I have to say is not too expensive. But for it's actual effectiveness, I think this price is overinflated. Yes, this medicine will provide short term relief to your child in terms of alieviating the cough and easing the throat. But it is the short length of time that this medicine works that is the problem.
Summary: OK. BUT NOT GREAT.
