      4 stars

*The rattle that we have is slightly different to this one, I think it must be the older version where Peter Rabbit is holding the ring part rather than have it as part of his body.*

When my grandson was born I bought him this lovely Beatrix Potter teether. I bought it from my local garden centre for £8. I know that £8 is quite a lot of money to pay for a teether toy but because this is a very well recognised character I thought it would be a lovely gift.

      What is it?

This isn't just a teether toy but it works as a rattle and also as a soft toy too so you get more for your money so again this justifies the price. There were various characters available but I chose the Peter Rabbit one as I thought that would be more recognisable and perfect for a boy. You get the soft toy part which is Peter Rabbit and he is holding the teething ring. The toy is about 10cm tall so not very big which is ideal for a little baby. It is very obviously Peter Rabbit with his little blue waistcoat and his brown fur. The ring is quite a thick plastic which is see-through and within this ring are a few little balls which create the rattle element of this. The ring isn't very squashy, it's actually rather firm so unlike other teethers which tend to have a bit of give on them.

      Introducing it to baby

My grandson was shown this from being a few days old and although he couldn't focus properly it gave him something to try to concentrate on. I remember shaking this in front of him and he would be alerted to the sound and try and focus. Gradually he developed and could hold onto it. He didn't use it as a teether for a while but liked holding it by the ring which he was able to grip and he would jerk his hands around and find it funny that he could make the rattling sound. It was a good way to have him learn about cause and effect as he soon learnt that if he moved he could get it to rattle. Over time he would chew on the rabbit's ears but he never actually spent time chewing on the ring. I think it was just too hard so didn't feel right on his gums as he did spend a lot of time chewing on the more squashy teething toys that he had.

      Keeping it clean

It is hard to keep this clean because of the soft toy attached to it. Obviously anything that may go in your baby's mouth needs to be kept as clean as possible but there's only so much you can do with a soft toy so we would just sponge it down and remove anything sticky but I think in terms of a teether it's not the best because you can't wash it properly and sterilise it.

I think this is a very sweet toy and it's nice that it's more than a teether or soft toy, the rattle element of this was definitely my grandson's favourite part. He doesn't play with it very much now he is 2 but sometimes he will pull it out of his toy box and give it a bit of attention but it is definitely a younger baby toy. The practicailities of having a teething toy which can't be sterilised isn't really ideal so that is a down side of this but I suppose babies chew on so many things and you can't sterilise everything. My grandson liked this toy when he was little and it was nice to see him develop over time so he could hold it and rattle it himself. I'm giving it 5 stars as it is very good quality and was quite a comfort to my little grandson for some time.
