Advantages: bright colours - clear voices - chunky keys - recognisable voices
Disadvantages: none
We bought the Vtech Bob the Builder talking telephone for my sons second birthday. He was mad about bob the builder and also liked anything with buttons to press and flashing lights and sounds so this toy seemed ideal. It is made by Vtech which is a brand I would try for quality and entertainment value when buying childrens toys.
The phone is a push button phone made of hard blue plastic with a yellow earpiece. Each number key has a picture of one of the Bob the Builder characters on it and flashes when it is pressed. The phone is brightly coloured and chunky which is excellent for little hands.
There are three games to play but the phone can also just be used as a pretend telephone. My son particularly likes' can you find them' and 'can you follow it'. The first game asks you to find pilchard, for example, and when you press the key with pilchard's picture it congratulates you. The second game the phone lights up a series of characters and you have to press the key showing the correct character in the correct order and when you get it right it asks you to follow a longer sequence.
The main voice is English and very clear and easy to understand. The voices of the characters sound just like they do on the television programme and so are easily recognisable for young children. We have a talking scoop that has an American accent so before I bought the Bob talking telephone I made sure to check the quality and familiarity of the characters voices.
We have had the telephone almost a year now and it is still a favourite not just with my two year old but also with his 4 your old brother.
The telephone is hard wearing and our still looks in very good condition. The batteries are easy to change and it needs two AA batteries that fit into a secure compartment in the base. You will need a screwdriver to replace them. There is an on/off switch but if the telephone is left unattended for a little while it will turn itself off.
I think we paid £14.99 (Nov 2009) from Toys R Us but I believe it retails at around £16.99 now (Sept 10) online.
I would recommend this telephone to anyone with young Bob the Builder fans.
