Kai turned one years old last month, and amongst the bundles of gifts that he got there was this little wooden pull along duck, which was a present from a member of my fiancés family. As soon as he saw it, he absolutely adored it.
He immediately understood without anyone even showing him that when he pulled the string the duck would move whenever he did so. He was beyond himself with excitement and kept smiling and laughing at it, and showing me and everyone else watching him, thinking he was some kind of magician. And of course, he was babbling and making silly noises, so I could tell he absolutely loved it.
I've got to say though despite Kai's initial interest in this toy, it didn't keep his attention for very long. For a week or so he was quite happy to cart it around behind him or play with it with me, but after that he just lost all interest, which I guess is because he has plenty more interesting (eg electronic and interactive toys) so the silent wooden duck with a bit of string attached wasn't as appealing as it once was!
The toy is very well made, nicely designed and durable though, I'll give it that - it fell down the stairs a few times when Kai insisted on carrying it with him (how he carried it I dont know, it is quite large and very solid) when I took him up to bed and he decided to drop it, and there was no noticeable damage. It's made of solid, good quality wood which I see as an advantage because I don't like him playing with plastic toys (plastic can contain dangerous chemicals). So because of this I never felt anxious when he was playing with it.
The toy was a gift, but it costs around £16 to buy new. I think this is expensive for a wooden toy of this sort but the quality reflects the price. It's just a shame that Kai lost interest so quickly.
Working in a nursery means I come across many different toys and this is one of the popular toys with the younger members of the group. Children in my experience all love ducks, feeding the ducks, looking at duck pictures, playing with ducks in the water and so we thought it would be nice for them to be able to play with a duck out of the water. This duck can be purchased from Amazon for around £10.
This pull along duck is made from wood and is suitable for children 12 months plus. My nursery is 2-5 years olds all based in one room and I would say it is mainly the 2-3 who will be found pulling it along saying 'come on duck' as the duck comes along behind them quacking to let them know he is still there on his big red wheels. As the duck moves he also flaps his wings and and moves his head which the children love. The finish to the duck is very bright nice yellow beak and wings which all help in attracting the children to play with him.
This duck has been pulled around inside and out and pulled between children as well as the fight over who is taking the duck a walk today. The pull cord has stayed strong through out and the duck is made to a high enough standard to with hold a bit of pulling. To servive in our nusery toys have to be well made and this toy certainly is.
I will give this little yellow duck 5 stars as he is able to withstand the trials of being a nursery toy.
