Chad Valley My First Mega Drum Set
Advantages: Great fun, lights, music, bashing
Disadvantages: Not sure what all the buttons do
This is not just any old drum kit, this is a MEGA drum set. My son received this toy for Christmas and its by far his favourite toy so far as he can bash it and it makes noise and he can dance around to the music.
The drum kit is described by Chad Valley as a "colourful rock 'n' roll drum set and it does look a bit like a professional drum kit, albeit a plastic one. The bottom part of the drum kit doesn't actually do anything, its really just a stand for the top section but it is made to look like a drum on its side and has the bits on it that make it look like a snare drum. This stand portion is quite sturdy and is fine when my son is hitting the top square on but if he pushes the drum kit over (just like a proper rockstar) the two sections come apart quite easily as they only slot into each other so its a bit annoying putting it back together all the time but I think they've done this so you can just play with the top portion on its own if you want to, say if you play with is sitting down or take it in the car perhaps (although I wouldn't really advise that, its quite loud!)
It's on the top section where all the action happens. The drum kit stands 42.5cm high so it's just the right height for my 17 month old boy to stand in front of and perfectly bash the drums. The top section is nicely shaped so that you can stand in front of it. There are two drum pads, one small one on the left and one bigger one on the right. These press down when you beat on them and are really easy to press, even if you give it a soft press which is good although we generally just whack it as hard as we can. Its nice and robust though and does stand up to a lot of bashing. The pads are made of a thick see through plastic and when you press them they flash coloured lights to the beat of the music, its like a disco when it gets going!
There is also a plastic set of cymbals in the middle of the pads which make a cymbal sound when you bang on them too. They are on a little bit of plastic and so the cymbals pivot and move like a real cymbal would which is quite cool.
Now, when we got this at Christmas either my husband was a bit too quick to throw away the packaging or this drum kit didn't come with any instructions but I really wanted to read about how these drums work properly as even though they are really simple to figure out I'm still not exactly sure what all the buttons do so if anyone else owns this drum kit please let me know.
There is a round purple button with the play icon on it so this obviously means play and when you press this button it plays some upbeat music for a couple of repetitions. This button is the one we press the most often because it plays music for the longest. It gives my little boy enough time to dance around and then come back and press the button again. The middle yellow button has some arrows on it and the green button on the left has a 1-2-3 written on it. When pressed, both seem to just play a few bars of notes and then that is it. I know one is a demo button but I'm not sure which is which. There is a simple on/off button that slides from side to side and my little boy has already figured out how to do this so when I turn it off to get a little bit of peace and quiet he knows exactly how to switch it back on!
Anyway, apart from not knowing what all the buttons do this is a very fun drum set that I can see us playing with for a long time yet.
