Little Man got the Chad Valley Tractor and Trailer toy form my aunt as a late Christmas present. It is slightly larger than the one pictured with a green tractor and yellow trailer, and comes with a farmer, horse, chicken, pig, sheep and cow.
It is a large chunky toy, and is about 38cms by 20cms tall. The tractor makes a clicking sound when it is pushed along, and has two buttons on the trailer which makes noise when pressed. The steering wheel on the tractor makes a hooting horn noise, and the funnel makes a sound like the engine starting followed by a reversing alert. There are also buttons in the holes where the farmer and animals. The Animals make their respective noises when put in there holes, and the farmer plays Old Macdonald when put in the front of the tractor.
We have had this toy since the beginning of the year, and little man still plays with it every day (I think mostly to annoy me with the music!), and it has lasted well against a very boisterous 2 year old. Although Chad Valley are a reasonably budget toy range the tractor has lasted as well as the ELC and Little Tykes vehicles that live in our house. It has taken the usual furniture ramming without a scratch! The only thing that it could benefit from is the ability to turn the music down or off like most of his ELC noisy toys have. It does drive me a mad at times, and you will find yourself singing Old Macdonald at odd moments!!
The toy is recommended for over 12 months which I think is about right. The tractor and trailer is large, and the removable characters are hard and chunky. The only one probably small enough to be a hazard is the chicken, and even that is at a push! It is a good way to play animal sounds with a younger child, especially if you are as rubbish at the noises as I am, and as the holes on the trailer will only match the correct animal it is a great way of learning what animal makes what noise! The toy takes 4 AA batteries, and you will need a screwdriver to change them over - however we have not had to change ours yet which is pretty good going!
My Aunt got this from Wilkinsons for £15, and I think that is excellent value for money. I would definitely recommend it, despite not being able to turn it off, although you might want to hide it from time to time!
My son was given this by his grandparents last Christmas when he was two months old. As the box says it is for twelve months and up, I hid it away until he got closer to the twelve month mark. Having rearranged his bedroom a few weeks ago I rediscovered this toy and got it out for him to play with. He is now 10 months old and is not usually that keen on complicated plastic toys, preferring instead to play with his stacking cups, building blocks and anything he can put in his mouth to chew! However, this toy proved to be an exception. From the moment I took it out of the box he has been playing with it avidly, even though it is far to big to go in his mouth.
The toy looks exactly as in the picture above. The colours are all nice and bright to capture your child's attention. The tractor and trailer cannot be separated but are attached by a sort of hinge so it can be pushed around corners.
In the tractor sits a farmer and in the trailer there are four farmyard animals - a cow, a sheep, a chicken (actually a cockerel I think) and a pig. Each of these sit in their own shaped slots so the cow can't steal the pig's seat in the trailer. When you put each animal in their slot they make the relevant noise. So the sheep goes 'baaaaa', the cow goes 'moooooo', the pig goes 'oink oink oink oink' and the cockerel goes 'cockadoodle'.
When you put the farmer in the driving seat of the tractor it plays Old MacDonald with various farmyard animal sounds in the background. Thankfully this version of Old MacDonald isn't played with all the words sung in an annoying squeaky voice but instead only the 'E I E I O's are sung. Which makes it considerably less irritating than most of the noisy toys my son has in his toy box.
As far as my son is concerned by far the best aspect of this toy is the funnel on the front of the tractor which makes three different tractor-y sounds when pressed: a chugging tractor engine, a beeping sound as if the tractor is reversing and a tractor horn.
The front wheels of the tractor make a clicking noise when they are turned. My son loves to push it along with him when he is crawling - it is good to crawl along with because the wheels don't turn too fast so it doesn't run away from him.
My only criticism of this toy is that the animals and the farmer don't stay in their slots very well. They just rest lightly in there and so they are constantly falling out and getting lost. These pieces aren't small enough to pose a choking threat and there don't appear to be any other loose parts on the toy so it seems pretty safe for a young child. It also seems very robust as it is constantly getting bashed and dropped yet it is still working.
I imagine this toy was bought from Woolworths originally which is obviously no longer a shopping option. However it is currently available from Argos priced at £14.99.
The Chad Valley Tractor and trailer is a lovely brightly coloured pre-school toy. It is made of very hard plastic and is very sturdy. You get a tractor and trailer that are joined together and cannot be taken apart. Inside the tractor you have a farmer, a cow, a chicken, a pig and a sheep.
The tractor and trailer are very brightly coloured with lovely big wheels. There are no small parts that could be dangerous to a young child and it is a nice size for pushing around the floor. The characters inside the tractor are also made of very hard plastic and are really cute and cheerful. Each character fits into a certain hole in the top of the tractor or trailer and each hole is shaped to fit the base of each animal.
When you place each character into the trailer you hear the noise of the animal being placed. For example when you place the cow into the trailer a mooooooo sound is heard. When you place the farmer into the tractor it plays old macdonald. When you press the funnel on the front of the of the tractor it makes a chugging tractor engine noise of you hear a horn.
This was bought for my son for his first birthday. He is now three and still plays with it. My youngest is now 11 months and he has been playing with it since he started crawling. He likes to push it around the floor and dance to the music. Although it is now two years old and has taken some harsh treatment it is still in very good condition and has not been broken or needed new batteries.
This Chad Valley Tractor and Trailer is available from Woolowrths for £14.99 or online at www.woolworths.co.uk.
I am very pleased with this toy it is very colourful and attractive to younger children and it is completely safe. The animals and farmer are a nice size for a child to hold but do not present any risks of choking. We are a farming family so this toy is perfect for us but I would recommend it to anyone as it is very well made, very entertaining and long lasting.
Free wheeling tractor with melody and sounds and enough room for a few farm friends.
