When my son was ready to move from his pram to his pushchair I felt that he would benefit from some toys or books attached to the pushchair to keep him occupied. Now, there are a fair few toys on the market that are designed solely for this purpose but I was mindful that the style of our buggy would not accommodate a lot of these. I loved the toys that wrap around the buggy bar but our pushchair didn't have a buggy bar that would be compatible with these as it was covered with the footmuff so these were out. In the end, I settled for these discovery balls from the Early Learning centre, which are suitable from birth for £8.
The set includes three material balls with a C-shaped plastic link attachment to attach them to the pushchair (or car seat/playmat). Each has a different coloured link (blue, red and yellow) and each ball is different in appearance too. One is a silky material, bright red in colour with white polka dots. This ball is filled with a 'crinkly/crunchy' material so rustles when squeezed. The other two balls are sectioned into six coloured portions - each with a different pattern and colour. There are stripes and spots and some sections have a picture of a friendly bug sewn on. The sections are also made from different materials e.g. felt and the silky material that the other ball is made from, so have different textures too. There is a bell inside one too so they make different noises.
I attached these to the buggy using the clips provided but this was quite difficult as they didn't open very much. Once on the buggy they also could not be moved very easily. My son immediately took an interest in these - I am unsure as to whether this was the bright colours or just the fact that they were new and hadn't been there previously! He particularly liked squeezing the scrunchy one and enjoyed the sound this made. After a few trips out in the pushchair though, these didn't really capture his imagination much and he began to lose interest in these. They also got dirty quite quickly and do not wipe clean very well. I also noticed that the red ball was beginning to show wear and tear with small white threads appearing in the fabric.
I think that these are probably best used by a very young baby - I would hang these from the activity arch of a play mat or something - as the bright colours and the different textures are undoubtedly stimulating. However, there is really very little for the child to explore or do with these so they do not really hold the interest for long - so not brilliant as a buggy toy. Overall, if you can get them in the ELC sale event they would make a nice gift for a really young baby but, other than that, I can't really recommend as we didn't get a great deal of use or value from these.
