ELC Click Clack Dino
Advantages: Great design, fun for ages
You only expect some toys to last a couple of years, whether it be because of the price you paid or the design quality or even the fact that your kid will grow out of it before too long. However, some are pretty good as hand me downs, and I have to say that the quality of toys from the Early Learning Centre has always impressed me.
This particular toy is one of the simplest, but also leads to hours of fun if you want it to. It is essentially a wooden dinosaur on wooden wheels pulled along by a single piece of string that is just attached to the front of the dino. However, a lot of thought has gone into the design. The dino is basically the head, with the curved back of the body linked together with four planks of wood which although held on do move whenever you pull it along by its wheels, which act as the feet.
As you pull it, the wheels go round and the planks of wood are forced gently into each other, making that echoey wooden noise that simply reminds me of the simplest of Christmas gifts, free from all gadgetry, with just good design, quality wood and a loving touch put into it. The click clack sound is lovely to hear for the most part, and only after excessive use would it get on your nerves!
There are other similar toys around, but a lot of them rely on the movement for them to function at all. This is on four wheels, which means even pulling it gently makes the parts move, whereas similar toys on two wheels (of which we have one), only work once you've built up a head of steam, and ideally you don't want to encourage TOO much running around looking behind you to see the dino is still following. Easy for accidents to happen! This one means they can walk and it still makes the sound, although I'd be a fool if I ever expected constant walking - the amount of times I've heard and seen this dino flying round the house!
Visually, it's kept quite simple. There are some colour variations, but by and large it's calm and not over the top like a lot of products can be. There's no use of the most vibrant of every shade of the rainbow, for example, and this is quite nice, although the visuals kind of don't really matter here. The main thing is the enjoyment and the longevity of the product. It has lasted a good while now, and shows no signs of damage despite a rather active young boy playing with it (he's now seven and plays army with it, you know, the evil dino versus every other toy!).
It's a lovely toy and one that'll last. If you're after a gift for a young'un this Christmas, the ELC have this at around the £10 mark. Well worth it!
