I am sure a those of you who are or have worked with early years children will recognise this or other similar toys from work...Similar or near identical toys have been used for I guess well over 2o years. We have the early years counting peg board at my school for special needs children and I have seen it at other child centres too
. Let me describe this early years counting peg board to you .it to you. This toy is made from a smooth wood. There is a flat wooden base about 10 inches long and ½ to 1 inch wide the hexagon shape. I find that this shape base is not as stable as an old peg board we have with a rectangular base. Along the top surface of the board are 5 holes drilled in at equal distances. On the top front facing edge of the base in front of these holes the numbers 1 to 5 are painted on in different colours number 1 blue, 2 green, 3 yellow, 4 orange, number 5 red. There are 5 cylindrical poles of different lengths these are coloured to match. . The poles push into the holes on the base the shortest blue one number one the longest red one in number 5. These poles are not stuck on to the base. With this set come 15 rounded beads these are brightly coloured to match the painted numbers with 1 blue to green and so on. These beads your child threads onto the poles counting and sorting the colours.
This is not quite the best toy of this design I have seen as the base is not as stable as a rectangular one I have used and the poles being removable, it makes them not quite as secure as if they were stuck in however that can be easily remedied by gluing them in though.
This toy is suitable for a child ages 18 months to the maturity of a 3, 4 year old.
This toy helps develop your Childs hand eye coordination, fitting the beads on the pegs. If at first your child fumbles fitting the beads onto the poles they will soon learn how to place them on easily finding that they can place them in the correct place that they can see, practicing this will help your Childs general coordination skills.
This toy also helps develop your Childs fine motor skills refining their movements to allow the bead to be threaded onto the pole. As your child matures this counting peg board will help with counting, number recognition and colour identification, matching. You could use this for simple maths adding the coloured beads or subtraction.
This is a standard basic counting toy that will familiarise your child with number Use maths language with your child as they are playing alongside you with this toy , more than,. Less, Add , Subtract as well as the rote counting.
There are many similar toys available from other manufactures one is from http://www.zigzags.co.uk/thetoybox.htm £5.99.
The disadvantage with this toy is that you will get balls have the floor when you child drops them on the floor all the time, {:~0 you will get slimmer though
Summary: A basic easy peg bourd
