This Early Learning Crinkle Caterpillar was a gift when Cameron was born, and although he hasn't actually told me, I think that it is one of his favourite toys. I call him Mr. Caterpillar because I'm not very imaginative with names, and I might not remember it otherwise.
Looking on the Early Learning website I can't find the one which is the same as this one, although we have recently been given the one which is on the website (which costs £5.60 currently, down from the usual £8). Our one is the same as dooyoo's picture.
The caterpillar is a jolly looking fellow with a multicoloured body and legs, with yellow face (with smiley features) and feet. He is wearing a blue hat. The caterpillar is made of that lovely crinkly material (hence the name) that baby toys often are. It also has a bell in it which makes a noise when rattled. It has velcro straps on it, so can easily be attached to a pushchair or car seat.
This would make a lovely gift for a newborn baby of either sex, and is bound to become a favourite. Cameron likes to dribble on him, and pick him up and drop him so that I can retrieve it for him. In fact it was Mr. Caterpillar who gave Cameron some of his first proper laughs when I came towards him with the caterpillar saying "Weeeeeeee"! It was worth it just for that!
5 out of 5 stars from me and Cameron!
There are many soft toys available for new born babies, and many designed to provide sensory stimulation. The Caterpillar from the Early Learning Centre is an example of one of the best. It makes a great first gift, being bright, interesting, jolly and ideally sized for tiny hands. It is also reasonably priced at around £8 and available in Boots at Christmas in their 'three for two' deal.
The sensory stimulation provided stems from the variety of fabrics used to make the caterpillar, and the fact that some parts of his body are lined with plastic that makes a crunching sound when it is squeezed. The caterpillar's hat, feet, and three sections of his body are lined in this way. Two body segments are not, so there is an element of surprise and discovery provided for the baby as they investigate their toy. The caterpillar's head contains a squeaker so there is a further surprise element to be enjoyed.
Another aspect not revealed by the photograph above is the fact that the caterpillar's legs can be pulled through his body, the feet acting as stoppers on either side. This means his legs can be pulled and rearranged to give him various rakish and comical appearances. It is easy for babies to do this themselves as the legs move quit easily. Most likely they will discover it by accident having decided to chew one of the caterpillar's feet whilst giving him a cuddle. The feet are perfectly sized for tiny hands to grasp fully and squish. The soles are a delightful array of chequered, striped and shiny materials.
Although there are some smooth and slightly rubbery-feeling fabrics used to make the caterpillar, the majority are soft and fuzzy. This makes the very friendly looking creature very nice to cuddle and snuggle. His bold stripes and spots and bright colours all add to his visual appeal.
It would be very easy for Baby to form an attachment to this caterpillar. The manufacturers have helped here by providing two Velcro ties on the caterpillar's belly, so he can be attached to pram, pushchair, car seat or cot.
As with most ELC products the caterpillar is well made, conforms to toy safety standards and is well able to withstand the onslaught produced by new and curious babies.
