ELC Cut & Play Pizza

My 5 year old loves to play shops with his friends. They often set up a play café (with very interesting prices)! The café sells a variety of pretend sandwiches in addition to pizza. The pizza used is one I bought from the Early Learning centre a few years ago. It really has stood the test of time!
On looking on the E.L.C web site I see they have changed the design of this play pizza slightly. The pizza I bought came in its own black plastic dish and included a spice shaker. The new version doesn't have a spice shaker and I'm not sure it comes in a dish either. The pizza comes complete with a pizza cutter and a slice server.
The pizza comes ready cut into slices and is stuck together with Velcro. It has good detail and looks realistic. The cutter is plastic and has a moving cutting wheel for cutting your pizza into pieces. My son enjoys using the slice server to give all his friends a piece. Both the cutter and server have had lots of use and are still in excellent condition.
The pizza is easy to cut and stick back together again for little hands. However the Velcro does tend to pick up dust and dirt and that can stop it sticking so well. I have often had to pick off the bits of fluff! The pieces of pizza are very durable and easy for little hands to manipulate.
The pizza is an excellent toy to encourage imaginative play. My son has a lot of the early learning centres play food and uses it to cook, play shops and make tea for his teddies.
The pizza is also good to help a child understand early fractions too. I ask my son for ¼ or ½ of the pizza for example. Children usually learn far more quickly when given a visual aid. When we play shops we use real money to buy the food on offer. This again is a great way for a young child to learn about money.
The pizza is a good toy to help a child learn social skills like sharing. Cutting the pizza up and sharing amongst his friends is a very positive play experience!
On looking on the E.L.C web site I see they now make a wooden version of this pizza for £6.25. This is less than the plastic one I have described which sells for £8.00. I would have preferred the wooden version. I highly recommend this toy. It is probably suitable for children from about aged 3.
