I've been cleaning out my daughters room, and it's thrown up loads of toys I've long forgotten about . Whilst giving her play kitchen a quick wipe down, and washing all the plates, I rediscovered this cut and play pizza from the Early Learning Centre that I purchased to go along with her play kitchen .
I'm going to start by saying that mine is vastly different to that pictured above . For starters, it comes on a pizza serving board . The second major difference is that instead of having the toppings already present and covered with cheese, mine comes with a selecton of toppings that can be arranged to the way my daughter likes them - slices of pineapple, green pepper rings, olives and mushrooms.
The pizza also comes with a pizza wheel, a serving tool, and a shaker of yellow bits that I presume are meant to represent parmesan cheese .
The slices have velcro down the sides, allowing the slices to be stuck together, which make a satisfying ripping sound when the wheel is pushed down the gaps to 'cut' the pizza . The pizza itself is made from sturdy plastic, and has so far lasted a year with not much damage . I have , on a couple of occasions, had to renew a bit of tired out velcro, and the pizza does also bear some chew marks from younger visitors to the house .
The pizza itself is a deep pan sttle with a deep brown crust, and a paler yellow 'cheese' made of velcro . Each piece of topping is also backed with velcro, allowing it to be safely affixed to the top of the pizza for carrying about (and also proving handy for storage when tidying away, since there is no bag to put the topping pieces into, and they could otherwise get easily lost.
My daughter enjoys playing with this set, as do her friends, although she does complain that she doesn't actually like any of the toppings. In an ideal world, I think she would like to see pepperoni and sliced tomato toppings , and I do think a deal more variation of toppings would add a little more play potential to this item .
This can be wiped clean after use easily, and although I do feel that the velcro does tire easily, this is easy to replace. I think the pizza itself, and the board are very sturdy with potential to last a long time . However, my daughter was confused by the shaker of yellow stuff we think is meant to be parmesan, and instead uses it as a baby bottle . The tools provided, the slice server and the cutting wheel, look realistic and add an extra dimension to the play, although the pizza wheel seems rather flimsily constructed in comparison to the rest of the set .
At £12, this is perhaps a little pricy, but it is lasting well, and I am confident that when my daughter outgrows it, this set will be perfectly good to pass onto friends with younger children after a wash and a few new bits of velcro .
4 stars !
