“ Brand: ELC / Type: Bathtime Fun „
My son received these floating magnetic bath buddies as a present for his first birthday this year. We had been desperate for some new bath toys when he turned a year as there are surprisingly few out there for babies under 12 months and we had grown very tired of his ducks! Needless to say then, we were very pleased to receive these. These are still available in the Early Learning Centre and are priced at £10. They are suitable for children from 12 months of age.
The set comes in a cardboard package that is opened with these on top. This means that they come complete with that annoying wire stuff that secures them to the packaging and takes forever to remove (take note for Christmas day!) Essentially, the set consists of three soft bath squirters that sit in plastic rings that float. The rings double up for water play as they each have different shapes/patterns cut out to trickle water through. So, the set consists of six separate pieces. The squirters are each a different water-based animal - a yellow duck (with blue goggles), an orange octopus (with blue spotty bandana) and a green frog. The frog and duck sit in colour corresponding rings but the octopus has a yellow and blue stripy one - although you can obviously mix these about too.
The squirters and the rings themselves float on the bath water. The rings are magnetic so that they can be attached together at the sides so that they sit in a line. In our experience, the magnets are quite weak though and these do not hold for long at all - as soon as the water moves and these 'bob' up, they break apart. The animals are attractive, with friendly smiling faces and are made of bright colours so are very appealing to your child. They are easy to squeeze too, so my son loves to play with these. He also likes to dip the rings in water and pull them back out to make the water trickle through.
These toys have lasted us well. We try to make sure that they are as dry as possible before we pack them away but, as with all bath toys, they do sometimes go away a little damp. Despite this, the squirters have not gone black or mouldy at all. The rings are made of a solid plastic so these wipe clean really easily too.
As a toy, there is not really a lot to these and, whilst my son still enjoys them floating around in the bath with him, there is not much he can do with them. They probably look better than they are in practice. They were a step up from the rubber ducks but he much prefers toys that allow him to play with the water a little more. There is little here to hold his attention or imagination so I would have to say there are probably more engaging bath toys out there. These would make a nice stocking filler for a younger baby - these say suitable from 12 months but bath time is always supervised so I think my son could have enjoyed these from about 8 months. If you can pick these up in a sale event at ELC, they may be worth a punt but I wouldn't recommend them at full price for toddlers as there is so little to do with them.
