ELC Happyland Sunflower School
Advantages: Lots to do and great scope for role-play
This was one of the later additions to my eldest's Happyland collection, but one she has loved playing with, especially when she started pre-school.
Sunflower School is a bright yellow and orange coloured pre-school where the children of Happyland can go to play and learn.
Double blue doors open at the front of the school, while the back is completely open, allowing kids easy access to play. There's a clock above the front doors, the hands of which can be turned round.
Inside, there's a set of drawers that are fixed down and don't open. Stuck on the floor are a road track, alphabet in a circle, and a world map.
On top of the building are four buttons. One makes a bell ringing sound, one the sound of children giggling, one plays an alphabet song, and the other a counting song. The alphabet song is only slightly less annoying than the counting song.
A sandpit turns over to be a table with musical instruments on. There are three chairs for the figures to sit on, a child-sized car for them to sit in, and a double-sided easel. A slide has a little area underneath, accessed via gates on each side, where the child figures can hide or play under. Although the cars and chairs are only small, the larger adult figures also fit into them.
A play mat is included which really enhances the set, although it's quite flimsy. The car can be raced around the track on the mat and the children can play hopscotch.
A school teacher and two children are also provided.
There's enough in this set to stoke a child's imagination and encourage the development of social skills. Children in the recommended age group are likely to be attending nursery / pre-school so can identify with the situation and will enjoy re-enacting things that may have happened during their time at pre-school. The addition of the sounds on the roof adds to the enjoyment and enhances play, whilst also helping to teach them to count and learn the alphabet. Although there are only two children included in the set, if you have other Happyland figures they can come to school too! My daughters particularly enjoyed sending figures down the slide, and having them drive around in the car.
The recommended age range is 18 months to 4 years, although there are no small parts included so it's safe for babies younger that that.
For sale at Early Learning Centre for £28, it's overpriced like the rest of the Happyland range. Although saying that, it's definitely one of the better sets and has lots to keep kids busy. I'd recommend looking for it in the sales or using a Big Birthday Club 20% off voucher.
Summary: Recommended as an essential addition to the Happyland range
