ELC Toddle Along Tortoise
Advantages: Mesmerising, lights up, moves, music
Disadvantages: Expensive for what it does
AS well as buying new toys for my daughter, I always keep a look out in local charity shops or car boot sales for second hand good condition toys as her attention is still limited and having a variety of toys can get us through a meal time for example!! Recently, I picked up this early learning centre tortoise in a charity shop for £2 which was very good, given that it looked in perfect working condition and when I looked up online how much it would cost at full price, I got a shock as it retails at £15, which to be totally honest I think it a little on the expensive side.
There is no doubt this Toddle ALong Tortoise as it is called is extremely cute, and when my daughter first clapped eyes on it, she was mesmerised and her little face always lights up when I bring it out. Since I bought this second hand it didn't come with a box, but when I looked up about the product it is actually designed for babies 12 months plus, but at 7 months my daughter absolutely loves watching this toy. I suspect that the higher age level is due to the fact that it meant to encourage crawling and walking, as you hope that baby will want to take off after this tortoise as it moves along the floor. My daughter isn't crawling yet but she is making movements to do so with the bum raised, so it will be interesting to see if this does encourage the crawling, although she generally just loves watching it move as she sits up!
To make this tortoise move, baby (or mummy!) needs to press the button at the top of the tortoise which will then light up and play some tunes (of which there are three!) as it crawls along the floor, slowly! It does struggle to move on our thicker rug, but has no problem on either our carpet or wooden floors. The only disappointing thing is that you need to press it quite frequently to get it to keep moving, as it stops quickly. THere is a further setting on the tortoise where rather than it moving, the tortoise can remain still but wil still play the music and light up. This is of less interest to my daughter, so after an initial try I haven't put it on this mode, but kept it on the moving mode!
Given that my daughter likes to drop things at the moment, plus that I got this second hand, I am pretty impressed with how durable it is. My daughter has dropped it on hard floors and it has shown no signs of damage at all, so I do feel, like other ELC products, that it is very well made, I just do not think that it is worth the £15 price tag for a limited use product. It is certainly a favourite with my 7 month old daughter at present, and I hope it will be for some time, but I am glad I didn't pay full price as it is pretty basic, though well made!
Summary: A great product with to high a price tag
