Advantages: Lots to play with

Disadvantages: Be careful with the binoculars

My daughter was brought an Early Learning Centre 'Young Explorer Adventure Kit' for her birthday, and absolutely loves it. I had seen it before when we visited a friend, whose child had one. My daughter was very taken with it, and therefore was delighted when a week later she had one of her own.

It has a lot of interesting toys in it, which would appeal to a wide range of ages. There is a set of binoculars. A watch with a compass in it. A survival belt, onto which you fit a cup, a pan, a water bottle and a torch. A lantern, which really works, a whistle and a 'multi survival tool', (a plastic Swiss army knife). In fact all a child needs to for a day's exploring in the garden, (or bedroom when it's raining!). As with most Early Learning Centre's toys, all the parts are well made, and they fit into a sturdy plastic box for easy storage.

The age range on this is 3 years +. My daughter is only 2 years old, but with some help she is able to use all of the pieces with ease. My only note of caution with this kit, is with the binoculars. They have quite a long neck strap. I was playing with my daughter when she put it around her neck and twisted. If she had been alone, it could have been nasty. I have removed the strap, and would recommend that anyone else who has this kit does the same. This can be done very simply. If you pull the strap very hard, the clips at each end come away. When I did this it didn't break the strap, so when she is older, I can reattach it.

Apart from that, this is a well thought out kit, which is good value for money. Another friend's little boy who is 3 ½ came over the other day to play, and was very interested in the kit, so guess what he getting for Christmas!

Yes, on our binoculars the strap just pulled out, I didn't make that clear in the opinion, so I've changed it. I hadn't thought of the clips, I will check these as well.

On our set, the binoculars have a safety feature that the strap is actually two pieces joined together by a sort of snap close clip, if you pull hard enough it comes apart. However, we found out that if you pull REALLY hard the strap comes out altogether! Good idea to remove it for younger kids for safety reasons, maybe this is one of the reasons it's labelled age 3+. The other bits to watch out for are the little clips that attach things to the belt, they can come off (they look a bit like big paper clips) and would be a choking hazard.
