Fisher Price Bounce and Spin Zebra
Advantages: Easy to assemble, good price, encourages physical development
Disadvantages: Takes up a lot of floor space
I'm a huge Fisher Price fan and had seen this Bounce and Spin Zebra many times in shops throughout the last year and it always looked really cute-lots of bright colours, no sharp edges etc just generally a great toy for toddlers. However I must point out that when I looked at reviews of it I was very suprised to find as many poorly rated reviews as highly rated ones. This threw me a little bit because in my mind I had already decided to buy it! I read reviews that stated the toy was unsafe, which as any parent will know is the critical point of purchase for a toy that involves physical interaction. So reading how children had hurt themselves on the zebra made me cautious and for a few weeks I did refrain from buying it. However the more I read, the danger seemed to occur when used by children who were either over excited or under developed, and too unstable on their feet to bounce safely. Seeing as my son is neither of this I gave in and purchased the zebra.
I bought ours from the Toys'r'us website back in October and paid £44.99 for it which at the time was the best price I could find as I got free delivery on it. However I must now note that by December in the pre-Christmas sales I saw it as low as £28.99 in ELC and Amazon now sell it for £39.59 so I would really recommend shopping around for it to get the best price.
The Bounce and Spin Zebra comes in a large square box and the packaging will really excite your child! When my son tore off the wrapping paper on Christmas morning he loved the combination of bright pictures on the white background. The contrast for his little eyes was great and his smile said it all! When we began to assemble the zebra I was very pleasantly suprised with how easy it was to put together. The pieces are all large so there is no fiddly or tricky parts and the accompanying instructions mean it's pretty much idiot-proof.
The first part to be assembled is the large green base. This slots together six co-ordinating pieces of green plastic which fan out and frame around the zebra. I like the fact that the base is there to make the toy sturdy and secure and give it grip on the flooring. When correctly fitted together you can tell it is adding stability and it's therefore it was very reassuring for me after reading some discouraging reviews on the safety aspects of this toy.
After assembling the base, which took no time at all you slot the zebra in place and use the accompanying screws to secure it. You will need a four point screwdriver to do this, but again it's increadably simple and takes a couple of minutes at the most. As the zebra itself comes complete and intact after this all you need to do is put the batteries in and he's ready to go!
My first thoughts when I saw the finished product were excitement! And it's not even something I can use! My little boy had a smile that matched mine and was bouncing his knees and clapping with glee in joy at his new toy! He was so eager to play I barely saw him stand still before he was climbing on and bouncing away!
The zebra and the base are all very brightly coloured, perfect to excite and entice your child to play. When I spend money on toys I don't like it if you can tell that a manufacturer has cut corners in their production of the item by mass colouring it so I was very pleased with the attention to detail that there is with this. The zebra even comes with little sneakers decorating his feet-a cute touch in my opinion!
The zebra comes with handle bars for your child to hold on while bouncing. These feature two cute critters which sit in such a way that gripping is easy for little, unfamiliar hands. There is also a roll around ball section which adds to the noise that is made when bouncing! The idea with these mini toys is to promote hand-eye co-ordination and my son does enjoy stopping from a little bouncing to flick the roll ball and touch the critters.
The reason that batteries are required for this toy is that there are five songs which play as your child bounces away. Each upbeat and encouraging your child to continue bouncing for the next song. I usually find the music to toys very repatative and annoying but this one isn't too bad, just fun and energetic and when the bouncing stops so does the music which I must admit is great from an adult point of view!
As far as it's uses go it's a pretty simple toy. It allows and encourages your child to bounce and spin around too. While bouncing your child can also spin 360degrees at the same time. This helps with co-ordination and motor skills and is great physical activity for little ones. My son instantly understood how to climb on and off the zebra and now he's a lot smoother in this motion as he's had practice at it. Combined with this and the bouncing itself it will really help to strengthen your child's leg muscles and encourage them to be more sturdy on their feet.
The strength of the spring in the zebra is weaker than expected but I am actually quite pleased about this. It's strong enough to create a nice, leisurely bounce for your child but it's not going to catipult them in the air or bounce back with any strength that could cause harm. My little boy loves it because he loves bouncing and it allows him to bounce as hard as he wants or as softly as he wants and he still gets the bouncing motion no matter what force he applies with his feet. I would say then that the spring is very reactive to force but not the spring of the coil doesn't appear to be any danger and so my son is happy and so am I.
Thanks to the base the toy does take up a lot of space but in my opinion it's very worth it and I can't rate this highly enough. It gets a full five star ote from me and my son! He absolutely loves it and I love to watch him on it! So although I paid more when I purchased it than it seems to retail for now, I don't mind and would happily pay the £44.99 again as it's worth that price tag.
If your child enjoyed the Fisher Price Jumperoo then I would thoroughly recommend this. It's like the toddlers version of the jumperoo! My little boy has always loved bouncing as he loved his jumperoo and I knew when he started bending his knees and imatating bouncing that he was ready for this toy. I must say though that the recommended age range for this toy is 1-3 years. However I would base this on your own child. My son was walking at ten months and very sturdy on his feet straight away so I don't worry about him on this, however your child will need to be able to control themselves and the zebra at the same time so it's best to wait until they are cnfident on their feet before using this toy.
Overall? A happy mummy and very happy bouncer!
You will need 3xAA batteries for the zebra which aren't included and you can also buy the zebra in pink and purple for the little girl in your life. For more details please visit www.fisherprice.com
