Advantages: Bright colours, improves motor skills and hand-eye coordination
Disadvantages: none
Although Fisher Price has several shape sorters and we had the chance to try almost all of them when visiting friends. The Cookie Shape Surprise is one of the most popular shape sorter of my kids and their little friends. We bought as a Xmas present for my elder son when he was 7.5 months old. The manufacturer says that it is good from the age of 6 months.
First impressions
I bought this nice little toy in Toys'r'us. As it was quite new I wanted to see myself its features. It comes out in a box that is open on one side, so you can try pushing the nose of the cookie jar. The shapes are packed and put into the jar. Looks very nice, it has a smiling face and a red nose that can be pushed and flashes. Its colours are bright and warm. I found it a masterpiece of Fisher Price's, so I took it immediately.
Surprise
It was the first Xmas of my elder son, everybody was excited. When we opened his presents and he saw the smiling little jar, he started babbling to it and laughed loudly. He was very excited. We opened the box and gave him the jar only, and he was admiring it for a couple of minutes. He loves this toy now as well. He was more than 18 months old when he could put the shapes in correctly.
Price
To be honest I can't remember exactly the price, but I think what is important to you now is the actual price of it, not the price of 18 months ago. At www.toysrus.co.uk you can buy it for 14.99 pounds or at www.amazon.co.uk for 13.99 pounds. There are other places you can buy it from, I buy from these two places most of the time.
Features
It is quite a simple toy as it is really designed for the little ones.
- You can set the volume of the sounds on the base of the toy. There is a little button that has two positions: a normal and a quiet mode.
- On the front of the toy, just below its mouth there is a little button that has three positions. When it is pushed to the left, the toy says the shape of the cookies. When the button is in the middle position the toy is turned off. When the button is on the right, the toy says the number on the cookies.
When the button is on the left the jar will tell the shape you are just pushing through the right hole and then plays a little sound. It says "triangle, mmm" or "circle, yummy", or "square" and giggles, or "heart, I love cookies" and finally "star" and plays a twinkle sound. When all the shapes are in and you want to get them out, the sensors within the jar's rim senses the movement and the jar starts to sing. It has a women's voice and is really cheerful. The text of the song is:
"What shapes are in my cookie jar?
Triangle, heart and star,
There's a circle over there,
Here's a square!"
- When the button is on the right the jar says the numbers on the cookies if you push them through the right hole. It says "three mmm", or "one, yummy", "four" and giggles, "two, I love cookies" and finally "five" and plays a twinkle sound. When you want to get out the cookies the jars sings another song:
"Would you like some cookies? Here they are
Five different shapes, in my cookie jar
If you take them out, you can put them back.
Five little cookies make a yummy snack."
- The jar is colourful, stimulating the babies. The body of the jar is sunny yellow. The rim is orange. The lid and the base is purple. It has a quite big red nose. When you push it plays those 5 little sounds that can play after saying the names of the shapes or the numbers. It giggles, says yummy, mmm, plays a twinkle sound or says I love cookies. Then repeats these sounds. When you push its nose plays only one sound, you have to push again for the other one. While you push its nose and it plays the little sound the light in its nose it's on then automatically turns off.
- There are five little "cookies": a green triangle, a red heart, a purple star, a yellow circle and a blue square. By putting them into the jar through the little holes children learn the name of the forms, the numbers on them, but most of all improves their motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
Maintenance
As most of the Fisher Price toys, this one is a hard wear too. It fell of several times from the highchair to the floor, but still works and looks like a new one. I just clean it with a wet cloth from time to time. I wash the shapes with clear water.
We play with it for 18 months now on a weekly basis and it works with the original batteries. Nothing has to be repaired.
Batteries
It works with 3 AA batteries that are safely hidden from the babies. The batteries are not included. You need a screw driver to open the cover on the base of the jar.
Conclusion
This is the most popular toy of my kids. They play with it for a couple of minutes 5 days a week. They love the smiling face and pushing the buttons (not only the nose but the sensors within the holes). It was a very useful present. I would buy another one if this one breaks. I highly recommend it!
Summary: Highly recommended
