Fisher Price Laugh and Learn Kitchen
Advantages: Lots of features and sounds, provides hours of fun
Disadvantages: A bit low down
We were in Toys r us doing some Christmas shopping for our daughter who had just turned 1. We saw a big display of Fisher Price laugh and learn kitchens and had a closer look. It looked just right for her age group so we picked one up for her as it was on sale for half price - I think it was supposed to be around £60 full price.
A few days before xmas, my husband decided to build it after our daughter had gone to bed and then it was ready to play with straight away on Christmas morning. The box was actually quite small for what was inside and when we opened the box we were greeted by lots and lots of brightly coloured plastic bits! We were both a bit horrified as we didn't expect there to be that much putting together involved but once we read the instructions, it was very easy to build and was up in around half an hour. It came with a few accessories - a plastic triangle, circle & square, a pan, a spoon, a red plastic ball and a blue plastic ball.
It was much better than we expected and has a little yellow sink which has a hole in so you can drop the plastic balls down and watch them come out of the 'drain' at the bottom, a hob that plays music when the pan is put on the ring, an oven with opening front and shelf inside, a timer on the front of the oven that spins round, a toaster with a slice of bread in the top that plays music when pressed down. Then there is a bright yellow crawl through arch which has a light at the top and a light switch at the side - the arch has a sensor so when baby crawls through, it sets of music and the light starts flashing - the light can be turned on and off using the big chunky switch on the side of the arch. At the other side of the arch there is a fridge which has an opening door and pictures inside of fruit and vegetables, there is also a shape sorter on the front for use with the 3 plastic shapes provided.
The kitchen has 2 sides and on the other side it is a living room type area with shelves and a radio on the back of the toaster. I think this was an afterthought as it's not as good at the front bit but my daughter still likes it anyway. It makes a really good variety of sounds, phrases and music. It helps teach opposities with phrases such as 'lights on' and 'lights off' when the light switch is pressed and 'on the stove' and 'off the stove' when the pan is removed or replaced on the hob. When the fridge door opens, it creaks or has funny phrases like 'see you later refrigerator'
This toy has been used several times a day since Christmas day 2008 and is still one of the favorites and we are approaching Christmas 2009 - my daughter is nearly 2 years old and I can see it lasting for a while yet. If anything, I would say that it is quite low down but this doesn't put my daughter off, she spends ages 'cooking' and opening the oven and the fridge and has even started copying the sounds and phrases that the kitchen makes. I am really glad we bought this toy as we have more than had our moneys worth from it. It is very hard wearing and still looks like brand new, even though it gets banged around and played with constantly and even sometimes climbed on.
Overall a very chunky, solid toy that has so many features it stops little people getting bored and provides hours of entertainment and fun. Great value and it isn't huge so doesn't take up much space in the lounge. Would definiately recommend!
