Price and Availability
I bought this set off Ebay for my daughters first birthday, I have seen a couple of these sets selling on Ebay and you can buy them used from Amazon too however it appears that the set has actually been discontinued and can no longer be bought new.
The set is part of the Little People range by Fisherprice, the sets are all pretty bulky and made so that they are suitable for little people to play with and the pieces are easy for little fingers to handle. The Little People sets are all of usual everyday areas that your child will come across such as a village, train station, farm and zoo as well as ones they are a little less likely to see such as Noah's ark.
As I bought this item off Ebay and it wasn't new I am unable to comment on how the item was packaged when new.
The toy is meant for babies from 1 year old which I honestly can't understand or see any reason why a younger child couldn't play with the toy as there are no small parts to it. When we got the toy the last owner had left the batteries inside and I have never had to change them in nearly a year so it has a great battery life, the battery area if you did need to replace them is on the underneath of the main toy and is secured with a screw so little fingers cannot get into the batteries.
The Main Piece
The main piece of the toy is the zoo area which has a grey cave, a tree with a hiding hole in the trunk and then just a enclosed area. The cave and the enclosure have little pieces of red plastic which movs back and forth so your child can open the areas and let the animals in or out. The three enclosures have little pictures on them to show which animal is meant to live in them and these are a Lion, a Polar Bear and an Elephant. There is a little platform hidden in the tree where we put the Bird character and then the Little People sign is on it too. Finally on the main piece there is a Monkey which is hidden in a bright yellow area and has a purple lever, when the lever is pressed the Monkey shoots up to the top of the tree where there is a bunch of bananas waiting for him. Emily really loves to push the lever and laughs as the Monkey shoots up, probably has something to do with her older sister saying oo, oo, ahh, ahh everytime she presses for the Monkey. The main section is brilliant in my opinion , it is really detailed, there are stickers on some off it which show the animals food and some water for the Polar Bear with brightly coloured fishes swimming in it. The toy makes you feel that a great deal of thought has gone into it and makes you feel it is a great quality toy.
With the zoo there were a great number of animals, all of these are nice and friendly looking, they are made to look realistic but child friendly and are nicely coloured too. There is a dark grey Seal holding a coloured ball in his flippers, a bright white Polar Bear, a little blue coloured Bird with a white quiff on his head and a white stomach, the Monkey who is brown and stays attached to the toy, I like the Monkey as I think he looks really cheeky. You also get a Lion in all the usual Lion colours with a lovely mane, a grey Elephant, an orange Tiger, a white Duck who has a little Duckling riding on her back, a yellow Giraffe with the usual brown splodges on him, a Camel, a Turkey, a stripy Zebra and finally there is a Kangaroo who is carrying a little teddy bear in her pouch. The animals are all very durable and my daughter has tended to chew then a little when she has been teething yet there is no damage to any of them which I have found with all Little People sets they really are great quality.
There are a few little extras that come with the zoo and the animals, first of all you get a number of red chunky fence pieces and they all have the picture of the animal they are meant to be used with on them. You also get some little people we got a little boy and a little girl although when we bought this set we were told that one of the people was missing. There is also a feeding area that the front opens on and a shed with no roof on it and finally the little boy we got was sitting in a little red vehicle.
There are a couple of things that trigger the zoo to make a noise, when we first bought this I hadn't realised it made a noise so you can imagine my surprise when I was unpacking it and it started to roar at me. Inside the Lion enclosure there is a paw print shape and when pressed you hear a roar, the speaker for the sounds is at the top of the tree so it seems a little funny when the sound doesn't come from where you press. Inside the Polar Bear enclosure there is another paw button which I think is making the noise of swishing water but this isn't really all that clear. In the Elephant enclosure the paw print makes the noise of an Elephant, this one is more convincing and the sound appears to come from the correct area this time. When the Monkeys lever is pressed there is a boing noise followed by oo,oo,oo,aah, aah, ahh which is what my daughter finds hilarious. On top of the cave there is a small yellow area which I can't really make out what it is supposed to be however the yellow platform lifts up slightly and makes the noise of a Seal so from this we worked out that this is where the Seal is supposed to sit. Finally there is a paw print in the top of the tree and when it's pressed it plays a little tunes as if a Bird is tweeting it, Emily really likes this button and she will press it and then sit and dance to the tune before pressing it again needless to say they one can get rather annoying.
Sophie enjoys playing with this with her sister and she likes to line all the animals in as if they are going on a walk like they do in school single file. She likes to tell her sister what all the animals are and she tells her what noises they make too although this gets a little more difficult when she says to me "Mam what noise does a Giraffe make?" Sophie wouldn't play with this toy on her own but she is 5 years old so I think this type of toy is a little young for her now.
Emily loves this toy, she likes all the animals and I find it quite cute when she tried to copy the Monkey noise, the Monkey is certainly her favourite out of them all. She likes to dance to the tune of the Bird and she finds it funny when Sophie jumps towards her with the Lion and lets out a roar. This has been one of her favourite toys for nearly a year now and she will quite happily sit and play with it on her own for ages. She also likes to take all the animals and put them in her buggy and take them for a walk which I find quite funny as you can just imagine what she will make of zoo animals when she sees the real size of them this summer.
There is loads going on with this toy, it is a bright and cheery toy, it is great on battery power, it is durable and my children love it. The only area of damage on this toy is on the monkey lever where you can see a crease across the plastic where it has been pushed down so many times. I would highly recommend this toy to any parent and would say the same about all of the Little People range that I have come across as they are all really good.
Summary: A lovely set
