Fisher Price Roll-A-Round Swirling Surprise
Advantages: Bright colours
My daughter has a wide variety of toys in fact she has far too many for her to use but the good thing about being in a large family with a few nieces and nephews under the age of 5 we tend to get toys handed down which obviously saves us money and of course should she not like them you don't feel like you have wasted any money! My sister in law has 2 children under the age of 4 and we tend to share our toys around and generally we have Fisher Price toys simply for the fact that they tend to be so well made and a lot of the time on offer! On toy given to us about 6 months ago was the Fisher Price Roll-A-Round Swirling Surprise.
The Fisher Price Roll-A-Round Swirling Surprise is a toy that I hadn't seen before and from Googling it it isn't widely available although it is on the US Fisher Price website so I can only assume it is still very popular over there. Fisher Price is a global brand that we have all generally heard of whether we buy their products or not. They have been going for years and years and supply the world with a wide variety of colourful products aimed at newborn babies right up to 10 and 11 years if not older. Their products are widely stocked online as well as in toy stores across the country.
Now as I didn't buy the toy I can't really comment on the packaging it came in. However, after looking online it does seem that it comes in a typically brightly coloured box which features the product name, red and white Fisher Price logo and the box has a window in it so you can actually see the toy itself as well as touch it should you want to! The toy seems to come ready made which is obviously ideal, so once you get yours you simply open the box and lift it out and it is ready to be played with! The toy itself is designed for children from 6 months up which I do feel is quite appropriate.
To look at the Fisher Price Roll-A-Round Swirling Surprise is incredibly colourful which of course attracts attention from my daughter. It certainly does have a gumball machine look about it! Its base is red plastic with a clear housing for the gumballs to be collected. The top again is clearly plastic but houses the yellow plastic piece which allows the gumballs to swirl round and then down into the base. There is a smiley face on the front which is quite sweet but I don't see it as essential. At the side of the toy there is a large blue plastic lever together with a yellow spinner at the front. The whole toy is made of quite a heavy duty plastic but no sharp edges or anything which could be problematic. The spinning balls are quite small and plastic but brightly coloured.
The Fisher Price Roll-A-Round Swirling Surprise helps with three main areas of a child's development which as a parent I do take quite seriously and with Fisher Price toys I find that they focus a lot on these specific areas. The three areas are:
Developing Motor Skills: this toy helps by helping to enhance hand to eye co-ordination as a baby will need to grasp one of the balls whilst trying to put it in at the top of the toy. It is also encouraged by the baby investigating the spinner at the front together with the pressing and pushing down on the lever.
Stimulating Senses: This is encouraged by the motion of the gumballs as well as the lights which flash when the toy is being played with. Also if the child watches the gumballs drop from the top of the toy down the spiral to the bottom this can also stimulate the senses. Auditory skills are also helped with the fun sounds and music which play when the toy is in use.
Enhancing Language Skills: This is all about problem solving as to enable the toy to actually work the baby has to figure out that to make the lights and music to play and not to mention for the gumballs to drop out the bottom they have to learn about to press the lever as well as learning spatial concepts such as putting the gumballs in and taking them out.
In theory the toy is easy the gumballs (you get four as standard) placed in the top, the lever is pressed, music and lights will start and the gumballs spiral and come out the bottom. The lights are bright and colourful and make a nice addition to what otherwise may be a slightly boring toy. The music is limited so if your child loves this toy then you might find yourself tearing your hair out as there is no variety in the music! However, for the music and lights to work you will need 3 'AA' batteries which are of course not included if you buy it from new.
My daughter had this around 6 months ago when she was around 13/14 months old but had played with it quite happily at my sister in law's from around 8 months. At first she could only figure out where the gumballs need to go and how to put them in there. However, once she was showed a few times how to press the lever down and for her to understand that once the lever is pressed the gumball will come spinning out of the bottom there was no stopping her! It was actually really nice as a parent to see her understand how to use it in literally a matter of minutes, that she could actually understand how to play with the toy properly.
My daughter will still quite happily play with this toy at home and has definitely been a firm favourite over the last year whether played with at home or at my sister in law's. I think it must be a combination of the music and flashing lights as these are always a big hit with my daughter as well as being able to play with the toy and watching the balls come spinning out from the bottom of the toy which always makes her giggle! We have of course had various other items put in at the top of the toy which of course don't fit and despite her best efforts she has now come to the conclusion that only the 4 gumballs will actually do the job!
Being a plastic toy it is of course easy to keep clean which is a must with sticky little hands. Although I am obviously pleased that this toy was given to me for free I had contemplated buying one for her as my daughter has always enjoyed playing with it and no doubt had I of bought a brand new one I would definitely not regretted my purchase at all as even at 21/22 months she is still quite happily playing with it albeit not quite as much. Definitely a toy which I think is worth it and something that will hopefully provide many hours of fun! I'd recommend it to all parents to help keep a child entertained and to help with their development. Without a doubt I'd give this toy 5 stars.
