Soft and square
This bright and fun activity cube was a present to my son when he was born. He is now six months and is starting to get quite a lot of use out of it, so this seems like a good time to write a review.
This cube is made from fabric and is filled with foam, so it is sturdy and keeps its shape perfectly, yet it is light and safe. It measures 13cm across, so it is difficult for very small hands to hold, but it is really the activities on the cube that hold baby's interest.
Each side of the cube has a different 'activity' - although I think using the word activity may be pushing it a little! But there is something different for baby to see on each side, and every side does something different too, or has a different texture to feel. So on one side there is a large mirror for baby to gaze at him or herself in. Another side has a man with a pouch, and inside the pouch is a small fabric dog on a ribbon which can be taken in and out of the pouch (my four year old girl actually enjoys playing with this part of the toy!). Another side has a cow that makes a moo sound when you squeeze it, and there is also a fluffy sheep, and duck with a crunchy wing and a crinkly flower. Each side is decorated brightly, making it fun and eye-catching for little ones. It is completely soft all round so it feels reassuringly safe for exploring hands and fingers.
Tummy time toy
My little boy loves playing on his tummy and he is constantly moving around, so this toy has turned out to be great for him as he can bat it with his hands and, unlike a circular toy, it can't roll away out of his grasp. He likes chewing on the poor little dog, and the cow noise never fails to raise a smile. I can also hold him in a sitting position and place this in front of him, and he seems fascinated by all the different colours and textures, and he likes to explore it with his hands. Despite the toy's simplicity, it is very appealing and my little boy has definitely started to take a real interest in it.
I really like this toy as it is fun, bright and safe and there is more to it than at first meets the eye. However I can imagine that once my son is crawling and moving about more he will definitely reject this in favour of noisier plastic toys and I can see this becoming less popular in a few months. So I would definitely suggest that it is bought for a baby at a very young age as I imagine that it is between the ages of around 5 to 9 months where it will get the most use
Price and availability
This seems to be available online for around £7 and upwards, and I would say that £7 is a reasonable amount to spend, but I wouldn't recommend spending too much more. There also seems a newer version of this toy available on amazon for about £10 so that may be worth looking at too if you are interested in a toy like this.
I would say this is a good gift for a newborn baby or for a first Christmas present as it is something a bit different.
I felt I had to write a review about this toy as it has actually surprised me with how much my son has enjoyed playing with it. When my son received it as a Christmas gift and I've got to be honest I didn't think we would get that much use out of it as it seemed a little bit on the boring side. On appearance it seemed to basically just be a soft spongey cube about 15 x 15cm tall and long with a lot of colourful pictures on it. My son was only 3 months old at Christmas time and he wasn't taking that much notice to toys yet, so most of his gifts including this one were put safely away in his toy box for when he gets a bit older. I also thought that the size of the cube was quite large, certainly not something my babys little hands could manage to pick up and play with.
But at 5 months old my son started reaching out for toys and trying to play with them, so I picked a few softish toys at random out of his toy box for him to learn to play with and this activity cube was one of them. Just as I expected, it was too big for my son to actually pick up himself so I either had to just place it next to him for him to look at, or place it on his chest so he could sort of fiddle with it and he has been really enjoying himself with it! The cube itself has 6 faces all with different amusing things on them for your baby;
The 1st Face - This face is blue in colour with little white spots on it, but mainly it has a large yellow sun with a mirror for the face of the sun, my son always seems very amused looking at himself in this little mirror!
The 2nd Face - This face is purple with a picture of a little boy playing in the rain with rain drops falling around him, there is a green felt flap at his feet for your baby to fold down and the boy is holding a ribbon about 5cm long with a dog on the end which makes a "crinkle" sound when your baby plays with it. This ribbon bit is quite handy actually as my son can pick up the cube this way.
The 3rd Face - This face is orange with little bumble bees on it and a multi-coloured flower with a smiley face. The multi-coloured petals of the flower also make the "crinkle" noise when folded.
The 4th Face - This face is yellow with little red flowers on it and a big sheep as its main picture. The body of the sheep is fleecey which is a nice different touch for your baby to feel.
The 5th Face - This face is green with little purple crowns on it and a cow as its main picture. The cow has a large pink mouth which makes little "Mooo" sounds when pushed.
The 6th Face - This face is red with a big yellow duck as its main picture and the ducks wing makes the "crinkle" noise when played with.
This is a very multi-functional cube indeed that entertains my 5 months old son for a long time when playing with it. It will probably also help him learn to play and grab bigger toys. With the cube being so soft, I don't have to worry about my baby dropping it on his face or anything as it couldn't possibly hurt him.
It is 100% Polyester and it can even be machine washed at 30 degrees which is handy. For being such a low priced and simple looking toy, it's served its purpose well and I'm glad my baby has it in his toy collection. It's one of the first toys my 5 month old has took interest in and Im sure we're going to get a lot more use out of it too.
Amazon sell this Galt Activity Cube for £5-£6.
Galt Activity Cube
This was one of the first toys I bought for Jack when he was really too small to play with it. The fact was it was cheap but looked good. Since he has had it a while I thought it about time I did a review of it also I liked the toy so much I bought two for Christmas, one each for one of my friends babies.
I bought the activity cube from Amazon for £5.99 pence and of course had to pay a small fee for post and packaging. I have not seen this particular activity cube for sale anywhere else although these are so many products that are similar out on the market.
The cube arrived with a few days and on opening the posting box it came in the cube was held in a handled plastic container. Although this kept it nice and snug it was really of no use so this was thrown away. Of course just like any cube this one has six different faces each with something different one. I will go through each side individually and talk about what each face has to offer.
The first side has a picture of a cow on it. It is drawn in a cartoon way with a splodge of yellow hair and yellow hoofs. It is covered in blue splats and the main colour is white. There is a large pink nose that comes off of the body and if you press the right part it makes a Moo sound. The background is coloured in bright green with purple pieces of grass. It is not your average run of the mill cow but it does look like a cow none the less.
The next face of the cube has a cartoon drawing of a yellow duck on it. The duck has a large drawn on orange bill and two blue feet. It is on a red back ground with little purple chick like animals all around it. There is a large green wing with white spots that can be lifted up and inside this wing it a sort of plastic that makes a nice crunching sound.
Turning the cube again to show the next face you see a purple background with a drawing of a girl in a red jumper and hat she is holding onto a piece of ribbon which comes away from the cube and attached to this is a fabric picture of a dog where inside is again some noisy plastic that when touched makes a scrunching sound. The dog can be placed at the little girls feet where there is a piece of green felt where the dog can be slotted in.
A sheep with a large fluffy white coat is the main character of the next side and again it is drawn in a cartoon like manner with a large blue face and blue feet. The fluffy white coat sticks out from the cube feels very soft. The sheep is on a bright yellow background with pretty red flowers all around it.
Turning the cube in a different direction you get to see a large flower who takes up all the space of the next side of the cube and this flower has a bright yellow smiley face with five different coloured petals, red, purple, blue, green and pink. All these petal are made of fabric but inside is again the crunchy plastic that makes a lovely scrunching sound. There are small yellow and blue bumblebees scattered in the background.
The final side of the activity cube is a mirror encased in a yellow fabric with the crunchy plastic all around. The mirror is not that clear because it is that mirror paper that makes everything looks a little out of proportion. But you are still able to see your reflection well and this can be cleaned easily.
Jacks favourite is the dog and the little girl side as he can grip on to the dog and swinging the cube round and round. He likes all the crunchy plastic material, as he loves listening to that sound.
All in all I think this is a really good toy and for the price I think it is a total bargain. Jack seems to be far more interested in the basic toys such as this one than the more expensive ones that we have bought him. He plays with this cube mostly everyday and enjoys doing so.
The fact that the cube is soft and easy to play with makes it lovely and safe to leave him with it. It can be easily wiped clean and there is so much to touch, to learn and to look at.
I would highly recommend this activity cube to everyone as Jack seems to get a lot of enjoyment from it and at this price how could you not want to buy it.
I hope this has been of some help. Thanks for taking the time to read. xxxx
