Galt Fill and Spill Handbag
Advantages: Girly, nice contents
Disadvantages: Small bag opening, barely audible mobile ringtone
At some point each day, my 11 month old daughter will head straight for my handbag and begin to work her way through the contents which keeps her occupied for a substantial time. So, when we were heading on holiday recently, and I wanted to get my daughter a handful of new toys to keep her amused on some of the long car journeys, I noticed that Amazon were selling this Galt Fill and Spill Handbag, for just over a tenner, and I thought it would be perfect for my daughter.
This toy is designed for children from 9 months old and I would have to say that I think that age guide is pretty accurate. The toy itself is simply a soft pink felt like handbag with 4 contents - a mirror, a purse, a mobile and keys, obviously all of which are either made of plastic or soft material. These are in colours that match the handbag - pink, purple and green so it is a very girly toy!
The mirror is in the shape of a star and is a little round mirror attached to soft stuffed materail. The pink purse has a little zip so a child could put something inside. The mobile is made of soft stuffed material but has a ringtone to resemble a phone noise, and the set of two keys that also act as teethers made of textured plastic. THe two keys are joined on to a round plastic ring to keep them together however the ring can be opened like a keyring.
When I first produced this for my daughter her eyes lit up, but she found it difficult to get her hands in and out and there is no doubt that the opening of the handbag is small which makes it more difficult for small fingers. However, the more she played with this toy over the holiday, the more she got better at getting things in and out of the bag. This is another reason why the 9 months age guide is suitable.
At the beginning, my daughter didn't really spend much time taking things in and out, but preferred to simply play with the contents of the bag, and took a particular fascination with the little purse and the zip that opens and closes it. There is also a crinkly noise with the purse that she likes to hear when she plays with it. However, after a few days she started to put the contents in the bag and take them out, and now that we are back home, usually other small toys and puzzle pieces get put in the bag!
If I had any criticism of this toy, it would be that the opening of the handbag is quite small, and also the ringing noise of the mobile is extremely quite and barely audible, however neither of these issues are enough to stop my daughter from actively playing with this toy everyday.
All in all, I am so glad that I bought this toy. My daughter still goes to my bag everyday, but she equally loves playing with her own bag, and I can see this being a toy that will last her some time.
Summary: A great handbag for little girls
