Galt Fun Buttons
Advantages: Fun, educational
After threading toys being a huge hit for my daughter I bought her a set of cotton reels from Galt so she continue playing with threading toys at home. The cotton reels were an instant hit so I decided to purchase her another set which is this threading buttons set from Galt.
I've only seen these available to purchase from Amazon so I'm not sure if this is the only place that stock this product. It currently costs £5 but, from memory, I don't think I paid this much so it could be worth keeping an eye out to see if it gets any cheaper.
The set comes inside a hard cardboard box around 15 centimetres by 20 centimetres. This box also has a plastic carry handle should you need to use it. The box is sturdy enough to be used as storage when the buttons aren't in use, that is if you don't squash it by standing on it... whoops!
Inside the box you'll find a piece of string and 40 buttons. The buttons come in four different colours, red, yellow, blue and green. There are also a different number of holes on different buttons, from one hole up to five holes. If you do the maths you will realise there are two identical buttons in each colour and number of holes. Each button is around an inch wide so they are quite large but that makes them ideal for small hands. The string is approximately just over a metre long, it has a nice thickness to it so you don't have to worry about it breaking or snapping.
The whole idea behind this toy is that you thread each button onto the piece of string. It increases hand eye coordination. My daughter loves threading the buttons on to the string and will quite happily do this for a good 15-20 minutes without me hearing a peep out of her. Another thing we do with the buttons is sort them into different colours then count how many buttons are in each group. My daughter struggles with numbers past fourteen so these buttons are helping me teach her. The educational aspect of this is fantastic.
The recommended age for these threading buttons is three to six years of age. I think perhaps the lower end of the age recommendation could be lowered. I wish I had bought my daughter her buttons when she was younger so the threading aspect could have been more educational for her. Under the right supervision I'm sure a two year old would get a great amount of fun out of this. At the other end of the scale, I think six years is a little optimistic for the threading side of things, maybe the buttons could be used for other learning activities such as maths problems and such, but I'm sure you could purchase something a little bit cheaper for this use.
I'd definitely recommend these threading buttons from Galt. They are well made and the educational aspects of the toy are fantastic and there are endless things to do with them. I would perhaps alter the recommended age, and I wish I bought these earlier.
Summary: Lovely threading toy
