      On Safari

When my first child was born I decided I would take a sabbatical from my teaching job and resigned my position to concentrate on taking care of my family, I was given so many gifts my husband had to come to work on my last day to put some of them in his car including this toy box made by Guidecraft.

Guidecraft is an American company and the Safari toy box is hand made and hand painted. The dimensions are as follows: Length 30", Height 22", Depth 18". The toy box is made of an unspecified wood that in my view is quite a low grade, it is assembled well so remains sturdy but the actual quality of the wood is not as high as expected.

The painting across the surfaces of the box is attractive to children and of the highest quality in terms of colours used and the objects and animals depicted. It's obvious this is a Safari scene and I'm impressed that the underside of the lid and also the back of the toy box has been painted to an equally high standard.

The lid has a safety feature where cut outs and small wooden rods have been used to reduce the likelihood of a child's fingers being caught under the slamming lid. This has worked to our favour several times to date and neither of my children have ever damaged or hurt their fingers whilst using the toy box.

My children have their own bedrooms but both bedrooms have been designed so they can sleep together if they so wish. They argued over who was to have the toy box in their room but it has been placed in my younger daughter's bedroom as in my view the design is more suited to the more infant décor in there. We have redecorated the room in which the box resides several times since it was given to me and have never had to decorate around it in spite of it being a large and obtrusive item of furniture. It is soft enough to blend in easily with the surroundings as all good pieces of furniture should.

Nowadays the Guidecraft toy box is used to store plush toys of different sizes but previously it has been used for boxed games and jigsaw puzzles, for a collection of Lamaze toys and at one time I used it to keep all my the baby related items for my youngest daughter including nappies, changes of clothes and her baby toiletries. It is versatile in its design as it is a simple large wooden box with a beautiful cosmetic finish.
