Ikea Mula Stacking Rings
Advantages: Well made fun to play with and great for hand eye co ordination
Disadvantages: The stand can be used as a hammer and break things!
This set of stacking rings from Ikea was a present for our first son and is now coming back into use for son number two which has prompted me to write a review on this great little baby toy.
The design is very simple it has 7 rings of varying sizes and a top section that looks like the top of a light house. The rings all stack on a wood and rubber stand to give the effect of a brightly coloured light house. The stand Ikea claim is soft to protect children if they fall on it and whilst I agree it is soft compared to the wood of the rings it is still fairly tough rubber and if a child landed on the top of the stand it could still hurt them. We have been lucky so far and this has not happened. The other thing about the stand is once my son got into the idea of hammers I had to make sure he was always supervised with the stand and it was kept out of the way when not in use. The reason for this is it did make a bit of a lethal weapon when he held the rubber section and banged with the wooden base on things causing some damage to smaller toys and a plate.
Each wood section is nice and chunky to hold for young babies and toddlers and whilst Ikea recommend this toy from 12 months my 7 month old whilst not able to stack them does love holding them and manoeuvring them around to look at the bright colours. My first son received this for his first birthday and whilst not able initially to get them on to the stick in the correct order used to love putting them on and off the stick or just stacking them by themselves in different ways. It has to be said that both of my children have tried to give them a bit of a chew as part of their exploration of the toys and the wooden sections have all coped very well with this with no damage to the rings in any way. There are no teeth marks or problems with paint being chipped off and indeed when I got this out for son number two it still looks bright and colourful and like new.
The toy is great for helping them develop their finer motor skills as they have to learn to co-ordinate putting the rings on to the stand and as they get older it is a simple way of taking about sizes with your child for example which is the biggest to go on first when they are laid around. My son used to love this game or our other version of putting the colours on when he was able to identify for example which one was blue then red.
The overall look of the rings is great and very appealing to children with their bright colours and actually looks great to on the toy shelf.
At a cost of £7 this set of stacking rings is great value and certainly is one I would recommend for all young children. They are well made long lasting and great for improving hand eye co-ordination and fine motor skills. A full five stars.
Summary: A great well made stacking ring set that is built to last and fun to play with
