In The Night Garden Ninky Nonk Vehicle
Advantages: True in look to the one on the show, brightly coloured
Disadvantages: Too small! Carriages when connected easily came away
Before the age of one, my son was never really into to watching television so thankfully I had control over the remote in the house. That soon changed when we both discovered Cbeebies, and he became hooked on some of the childrens programmes and unfortunately I was grabbed along for the ride. One of the programmes he loved was In The Night Garden which he doesn't mind watching now, but unless Spiderman decides he wants to rescue Upsy Daisy, or Doctor Who makes Iggle Piggle his latest companion, its not his first choice of programme. But it is one of his sisters. Shes grown to love it, and with her being the age she is ( 2 ), this programme really fires her imagination and keeps her in a trance til its finished. That's why I bought her this from Argos for her birthday. It was £9.99 on its own, or in conjunction with a selection of other toys 2 for £15.00.
Why did I buy it?
She loves the show and is familiar with the Ninky Nonk. She has afew In The Night Garden books and plush toys, but nothing like this. I just knew she would love it, and I didn't feel the price was expensive.
What is it?
In The Night Garden is a television show, shown on the Cbeebies channel which is aimed for children between the ages of 1 to 4 years old. It features a combination of live action, puppets, actors in costume and animation.
The Ninky Nonk is basically a train, which carries the different characters in the show. It can move forwards, backwards, up and down trees etc. At the beginning of each episode there is always an introduction which features either the Ninky Nonk or the Pinky Ponk ( an airship ).
So this toy resembles the Ninky Nonk in the show. It comes in three pieces, each ' carriage ' can be connected to each other by hooking one on top of the other. Brightly coloured and very true to what it looks like in the show. Tallest part of this toy is just over 10 cm, and when connected the length is just under 28cm.
No batteries, all you can really do with it is either play with each component separately, or hook them up and together and push them around.
Suitable for ages 18 months and over.
How was it packaged
In a small rectangular cardboard box. Very eye catching and fun to look at as the box depicted a landscape from the show and on the back it showed what the Ninky Nonk looks like ( the toy that is ), and also lets you know you can collect characters from the show but these are sold separately.
What does my daughter think
I gave this to my son to give his sister as a birthday gift from him. As soon as she opened it she knew what it was and instantly fell in love with it. She finds it easy and fun to play with, and the fact it comes apart means sometimes when she doesn't want to leave it home when we go out, she can take one piece of it with her and play with it in the pram. If she gets bored with it or falls asleep, I simply throw it in my bag for safe keeping. She enjoys playing with it because she loves the show so much and the different characters.
What do I think
Lets start with when I first bought it. Maybe its my fault and I should have checked the dimensions online before purchasing, but when I picked it up and saw it in the box I thought ' is that it? '. It just looked so small, and in my mind expecting something bigger. Ive watched her play with it, and its not too small that she cant play with it, but even with tiny hands and fingers this toy still could have easily been held and played with if the size was increased abit.
The look and colouring is great. Very eye catching and true to the television version. I love the fact that its completely unisex in colouring and doesn't sway more to typical girl or boy colours. The detail is fantastic, the toy is sturdy and well made.
The ninky Nonk is split in three, and to join them you have to hook them together. Problem with this is they easily come apart which for my little girl isn't great because every few seconds shes calling for me or her brother to put it back together for her. So not only do they come apart all the time, its awkward for someone her age to hook them back together all by herself. Why they didn't have them magnetised I don't know!
One good thing to note about this toy is there are no small pieces that can be lost or create harm to a child, no assembly required or batteries and because its so small takes up very little room.
Would I buy this again? Probably not. It's a nice idea but poorly executed and doesn't give the fans of this show a good deal. Should have been bigger. But saying that, my daughter loves it and plays with is so thats the main thing.
Summary: Lovely toy for a fan of the show, but needs to be bigger!
