In The Night Garden Talking Plush Upsy Daisy
Advantages: Looks good, well made
Disadvantages: Voice box went faulty, boring
This was a Christmas gift for my eldest daughter when she was 11 months old. At the time she was not particularly interested in In The Night Garden, but we knew that it was a popular show and she would probably like it as she got older, and this is what her Nanna bought her in anticipation of her becoming a fan (which of course she did).
It's currently on Amazon for £18 but I'm not sure it was that expensive when it was purchased, but then again everything labelled In the Night Garden is pretty pricey, so it probably wasn't far off that price.
The actual toy is about 30cm high so is about average in teddy sizes, about the right size for a cuddle. It's quite soft (apart from the hard battery case (it requires 2 x AA batteries) in the middle where she also talks from) and it's very well made because there are no bits that can fall off and no loose stitching, it is also a good likeness to her character from the show.
It's actually labelled as a 'plush' toy, now I take this to mean it's soft & furry like a teddy. The only soft part is her face; the rest of her body is made from clothing so it isn't actually 'plush' but is still soft nonetheless.
It also talks...if you press her tummy.
She sings the Upsy Daisy song:
Upsy Daisy here I come
I'm the only Upsy one
I'm the only Daisy too
Ipsy Upsy Daisy Doo.
It's quite a catchy tune and I do love singing along to it, even after all this time. Upsy Daisy's song is definitely my favourite from the show.
Other sounds include her saying 'upsy daisy', 'ooh daisy doo' (I think, I still haven't actually properly worked out what she says here), blowing a kiss, and a jingly bell. These come in a random order so you never know what's coming next - how exciting!
It's quite easy for an adult to press her tummy but it was a good few months before my daughter could actually do it herself, she was probably getting on for 18 months before she had the strength to do it on her own, which is quite frustrating for her (and me when she is having a tantrum because it won't work), but then the toy is recommended for 18 months and upwards so I really can't complain.
When my daughter actually realised who she was, probably 3 or 4 months after she received the toy, she would make sure she had her by her side when she was watching In The Night Garden, and she also went through a stage of taking her out in the buggy when we went to the shops. But it has not been one of her favourite 'must play with everyday' type toys. It was more of a toy that was there and she would have a quick fiddle every now and then.
I've just extracted it from the pile to see what state it is in 1 ½ years down the line and it's still in good condition. There is slight bobbling on the sleeves, her colours have faded a little bit, and her skirt is fraying slightly at the bottom, but there is no major damage and her face is still 'plush'. So I suppose you could say it wears well, but it all depends on usage and my daughter hasn't over used it.
The box that activates the sound has seen better days though because it started going faulty probably about 6 months ago, sometimes it just makes a sound like she is doing a little burp. To me this isn't very good because my daughter is not violent with her toys and she has definitely not been violent with this one so there is obviously not a high quality voice box in there. (And she did start getting violent with it when it was clearly going faulty!!!)
I think these types of toys are more of a gimmick because although the noises it makes are a good idea, that's all they do and the kids do get bored of it after 3 or 4 goes. And my daughter has never been a child to have a favourite teddy that goes everywhere with her, so she has never been particularly attached to this, it has now just become part of the ever growing teddy mountain at the bottom of her bed.
So in conclusion, it was nice as a gift, but I wouldn't waste my money on one (and you can't even put it through the washing machine because of the battery compartment).
Summary: Good for fans of ITNG
