Lamaze Octivity Time
Advantages: Wide range of motor function practice; so much fun for babies
Lamaze is a company that produces a wonderful range of toys - we have an 8 year old son who didn't really benefit from their products, but also an 11 month old son who absolutely loves them. His favourite is this Octivity time toy.
It's a soft toy, in the shape of an octopus with a smiley face. The head squeaks when you squeeze it, encouraging that motor function in the baby's hands. It also teaches them that this is what happens when you squeeze it, getting them used to something, a behaviourist approach to learning that is so common in babies.
Each leg has a different 'activity'. Our son's favourite is a little starfish dial on one leg that you can rotate. He isn't quite there with rotating it himself yet, but it fascinates him and he is able to communicate with us to tell us he wants us to turn it, and he then tries to copy it. This encourages communication as well as us being able to see the pure concentration and fascination on his face when he's using it.
The other activities are also very good. There are a range of different textures, from a fluffy/woolly pad that tickles, to a crunchy black and white mini pad that is a little surprise (the crunchy feel, not that it's there!). It's a cleverly thought out toy. The mirror isn't the greatest, but then it's designed to be suitable for kids, so it's more reflective plastic than actual glass. There's a teether (hard flat plastic pad) on there as well in case your baby's teeth are coming through and they need something to soothe them a little.
It also gives a good range of colours. Strong green for the most part, there's some yellow and blue and orange and red in amongst it all, and also quite well created in terms of quality of design. This isn't the sort of thing that will fall apart after a few weeks of use. Good stitching, parts held together well, and you don't get a feeling that anything could come off in your child's mouth, apart from one leg which has little frilly ribbon type bits around a crunchy pad, although even these seem very well attached. I'm clutching at straws really!
The toy is a good size, about 20 cm across I'd say, maybe a bit more. It's handy to hold, easy to find, and certainly one of our youngest's favourite toys at the moment. Highly recommended, and depending on where you shop for it, it should be around the £15 mark. I've seen a blue one on amazon, half price for around £8, so hurry if this is something that takes your fancy. I certainly would!
