I love Lamaze baby toys, they are bright and colourful and lots of fun and luckily we are the owners of quite a few of these baby toys. One of the ones that we received for my baby boy was this octopus which has been big hit with both him and my little girl. Its great to now see him at 8 months of age really interacting with this toy in a way he didn't when he was a few months younger even though it did stimulate him when he was younger.
The toy is great. What I really like about it is that it has so many different aspects to it and learning possibilities as well as just being a cute toy that it is fun for adults to play with too and a lot more fun than just a regular soft toy that doesn't do that much.
The toy basically looks like a big octopus although its a lot more colourful. The face is at the toy of the toy and then underneath it are, yes, you've guessed it 8 legs. The face is lovely and bright and yellow and has a big smile on it which I think is a bit misleading as aren't octopuses supposed to be quite mean, scary animals or are they fish?? Anyway...... At the top of the head there is a little multicoloured fabric handle which is well placed I think as you can carry the toy around with this handle and it also enables you to play with his legs easily as well.
The eight legs or tentacles to give them their proper name fan out underneath the head so you can actually stand this toy up and he stays where you put him. All the tentacles are different colours and so have different textures on them as well so not only does this toy promote visual stimulation but it promotes the touch sensation as well. The tentacles are quite thin at the top where they attach to the head and then they get bigger as you go down, they almost look a bit like a bowling pin, that kind of shape. Now, here's the fun part about them, when squeezed the tentacles play a musical note and each tentacle plays a different note so you can actually play tunes on them. Now, my kids just like squeezing them but if I can get hold of the toy and actually play with it myself without it being taken away by one of them I can play Twinkle twinkle as you have the right musical notes included in the tentacles but I have to say it is quite hard and I rally need to pay attention to which one is which, a little tip, its a good idea to write the order down if you want to impress people with your musical talents!!
The material of the octopus also has a slight vanilla smell to it which after about 8 months is still there and gets a bit stronger if you touch the octopus and play with it. Its a nice fragrant smell and not too overpowering, its really nice and must be quite appealing to little ones who often familiarise smells with different memories, etc.
This toy is quite pricey, its in the £20 region although I would recommend searching around as I think Tesco direct sells it cheaper sometimes as does maybe Asda but it is a fun toy and well worth the money in my opinion.
