Lamaze P&G Captain Calamari
Advantages: Attractive, stimulating colours textures sounds and mirror, entertaining, great price, can hook up
My son received the Lamaze P&G Captain Calamari octopus toy for Christmas when he was six months old. I was thrilled as I loved the look of the toy and I am a huge fan of Lamaze toys in general.
- Play and Grow -
Lamaze has a range of toys called Play and Grow (P&G) which are designed to entertain babies but are also learning toys so they help educate your baby and stimulate his/her senses. I really love this range and every toy we have from it has been a huge success.
- Captain Calamari -
The best way to describe Captain Calamari is that he is a pirate Octopus. He is approximately 20 cm high and is a soft toy but with lots of stimulating accessories. His face is made from soft dark turquoise material. He has a big smile and a patch over one eye. He wears an orange head scarf as well as a crinkly purple hat with a yellow felt feather on top. At the centre of his hat there is a piece of multi coloured stripy material with a white plastic loop attached, allowing you to attach the octopus onto a buggy or car seat etc. As you would expect, the Captain has eight tentacles each with a different design: a soft green tentacle with a knot at the end, a silky brown patterned tentacle with a knot at the end, a soft orange tentacle with a silky yellow sock on, a soft pink stripy tentacle with a knot at the end, a soft purple tentacle with a knot at the end, a silky blue patterned tentacle with a textured orange see-through ball containing beads attached, a soft red tentacle with a knot at the end, a yellow patterned cotton tentacle with two textured blue rings attached. Quite a few of the tentacles crackle when touched. If you open the tentacles out you can see that underneath the octopus there is a mirror. Overall Captain Calamari is a very attractive, colourful toy that certainly appeals to my son (and me!).
- Playing with the Captain -
There is lots to stimulate a baby's senses with this toy. The bright colours are very are fun to look at and the rattling and crackling are nice to listen to and encourage babies to interact with the toy. My son enjoys shaking the octopus as hard as he can so the beads in the ball rattle and the plastic rings clink together. There are lots of interesting textures for babies to touch and grab hold of. My son likes to tug and chew the little knots on the tentacles and also likes to hold and bite the textures plastic rings. The mirror is also a nice touch as it is quite hidden until the baby holds the toy upside down. My son loves suddenly being able to see his reflection suddenly (or another baby as I'm not sure if he knows it's him!) For a while we had the octopus attached to a shelf above my son's cot and he loved staring up at it. As with all our other Lamaze toys, Captain Calamari is a very durable toy and has survived being thrown around and dropped with no damage what so ever. At 11 months my son still loves this toy and will play with it regularly.
- Age Range -
This toy is suitable from birth to 24 months. I think this is quite accurate because although a very small baby might not be able to play with it themselves, it is a nice toy to hang up so they can look at it. I wish we had the octopus when my son was born. My son still loves this toy at 11 months and hopefully he will continue to play with it over the next year.
- Price and Availability -
The RRP for the octopus is £10.49 but you can get one on Amazon for £7.95 including postage. I think this is an amazing price as this isn't a small toy and it has so many features. I would have expected it to be much more expensive as Lamaze is such a good brand and the octopus looks very well made and attractive.
- Would I Recommend? -
I would definitely recommend Captain Calamari and it is at the top of my list of gifts to give people who are having babies. I love the look of this toy and my son loves playing with it. I think this is one of the best toys we have received as a gift.
Summary: Captain Calamari is another brilliant toy from the Lamaze range
