Advantages: good for a baby

Disadvantages: get dirty

Lamaze is Americas leading childbirth and early parenting association Lamaze toys / learning curve are designed with this group. These toys cater for all your child’s early developmental stages. I am going to review their soft stacking rings today.

Stacking rings are a very popular toy for babies. The usual stacking rings are made from Plastic these ones from Lamaze are made from fabric they are a soft ring.

The base is a black chequered design; very young babies respond to black and white shapes first, the attached stacking pole also soft is blue with a yellow zigzag trimming around it. The stacking pole is just right for baby’s early grasp it is soft and squeeze.
There are 4 rings to stack on this pole. The rings are as with all stacking rings size graded this helps to promote awareness of size. The largest ring is a blue one with stars on it, the next a purple with red dots, then a blue and green diamond fabric ring, last a red ring with white spots. Looking online I notice a different coloured stacking ring with different coloured rings on it, maybe the one I know is an older model?

This toy is a phrase 3 Lamaze toy suitable for a baby over 6 months old

The colours of these rings are bright and contrasting appealing to baby’s eyes. The rings are soft. Each one feels different soft or crinkly some with a rattle or a squeak a feast for baby’s tactile development. A young baby loves to feel the different textures.
Baby will not just feel these rings with her hands but with mouth too, yes doesn’t everything go in the mouth. The soft rings are fun can double as a bracelet, zany headdress, spectacles, ankle bracelet, a tether. The games that can be played with them are many, peep boo, hide the ring, they can also be used as a musical toy scrunching, crinkling squeaking, yes they are fun.

The rings are washable in the washing machine the stand can be cleaned by wiping over with a cloth.

These rings as I said are good for explorative play but what about stacking? Well yes they do stack baby will need some assistance at first but should eventually manage to do them by themselves. These rings help encourage co-ordination skills. These rings help shape and size recognition skills. The only problem is the stand , why well its soft and after it has been used a few times gets very floppy not really easy to put the soft ring onto. So if you purely want a Stacking ring I would recommend a solid plastic one. Also for group nurseries I think a hard plastic one better as it is more hygienic easier to clean.

I have used these with special needs children for sensory stimulation they are quite effective as they do feel different. However as I said need washing to stay hygienic.

I looked on Amazon and have seen these toys available at £1 apparently it is out of stock at the manufacturer maybe they do not make this design anymore. The only price for a new one I found at http://www.whimsicality.com/cart/results.cfm?Searc h_Categories=44 it was 19.95 dollars.
However if these ones are not available any more there are several other similar stacking toys.
Although I think they are not ideal as a stacking toy I think the textures are good. Thanks for reading, have fun playing with your children’s toys. Mary

Summary: A soft stacking toy
