LeapFrog MyPal Violet Interactive Teddy
Advantages: Excellent interactive toy
This Christmas my little girl received the interactive toy My Pal Violet from Leapfrog and it has gone everywhere with us every since, singing along with us all day long! I really like this toy and so does my little girl.
Violet is a cute light purple stuffed dog. She has a very cute face with a nice inviting smile and is very soft and cuddly. She has big floppy purple ears and a pink collar with the numbers 1 to 10 on it. Her name tag lights up when she sings and really becomes a focal point of her whole being. Violet tells you when you buy it that, "I can learn your name!" Indeed, Violet is a very clever dog and can learn your name and all your favourite things.
Inside Violet's tummy is a power pack but it is buried quite a bit, you can feel it but I don't think it impacts on the cuddleness of this stuffed animal. The power pack can be reached by pulling back the velcro. The velcro is quite strong so it's quite hard for little hands to pull apart. It takes 3 AA batteries.
Like I said, Violet is interactive. She connects to your computer to allow you to customise the songs and phrases that she sings. I think this is a great personal touch and something your little on will love. Babies always love to hear their names and I really think this helps with learning their name too. For example, Violet will sing, "Me and my friend......(insert your baby's name here), we like to do everything together..." and so it carries on. You can also load your baby's favourite colour, food and animal. For example, we have pink for our favourite colour, bananas for our favourite food and a dog for our favourite animal. What I find quite funny is that these words are said in quite an American accent so maybe it's the programming, I don't mind the accent but some people may be put off by this. As well as these Violet also comes with 5 pre-loaded songs that play when you get her without having to load anything your self and then there is also a online list of over 30 songs that you can download include lullabies which I think are perfect for night time. The tunes are extremely catchy and really stick in your head and you will find yourself singing them wherever you go. However, they are really good songs, they teach numbers as there are counting songs, spelling songs where Violet will spell out your baby's name, feeling songs such as I am feeling sad and daily routines where they sing songs about getting up and going to bed.
Violet has 4 paws and this is how the music is selected, by pressing each paw. The bottom right paw is the on/off button, the upper right has a musical note on it which plays the songs. The bottom left has a night time picture on it with stars, a moon and a cloud and will play 2 minutes of bedtime music and the upper right paw is the one where different feeling are talked about. All the paws are different colours, green, red, pink and blue so this is also great for teaching colours. THe paws are easy to press as my little girl picked this up within a day or two and now keeps pressing the paw until she gets to her favourite song, "If you're happy and you know it clap your hands!"
THe toy is recommended for ages 6 months to 36 months and I would say that is probably fair. I have seen this toy on sale in Tescos and Sainsburys for £19.99 but I believe it is often in the sale and sometimes retails for only £10. In 2009 it was rated toy of the year by Baby Talk Magazine and in my opinion a wonderful toy that you will get a lot of use out of.
