My youngest daughter loves the Cosy Coupe range by Little Tikes so when I saw this I knew I had to get it straight away. It was expensive at £59 but I knew she would get use out of it, and as her favourite uncle is a fireman I thought it would add to the novelty even more!
The Little Firefighters is perfect for little ones from around 18 months old and is really for outdoor use only unless you want a wet house! There is a pressurised water tank and hose that children can use to squirt water (supposedly on plants, but will no doubt turn into watering the whole garden - literally!). It is really easy to fill up but does get slightly tedious when they are using the water up constantly and you have to keep refilling it! The hose is removable and I have been known to remove it when I'm too busy to be filling the tank up every 10 minutes (I'm a mean mummy, I know!). Another point to mention is that the water tank is held at the back of the truck and is not hidden from view. When it's full it does make it harder for the child to pull around, and it can also pull off the truck fairly easily.
The truck is similar in style to the Cosy Coupe and has the smiling face at the front and bright colours. The one thing that is different about the firefighter's truck is that unlike the Cosy Coupe, there isn't a door to step in through. The child must step over the truck to get into it, but for older ones with longer limbs (my 6 year old will occasionally attempt to get into it!) it is a little trickier to get into than the Cosy Coupe. This is also worth bearing in mind for younger children, as they will find it difficult to get out of without supervision and therefore I would say while yes it is aimed at young children, 18 months is perhaps a little young just for the safety aspect of falling or tumbling when they try and get in / out.
It is all made from plastic and very durable, which is perfect for something that will spend its lifetime outside. I am generally fairly good at tidying away the children's toys from the garden but on the odd occasion when I have forgotten or hadn't had chance I don't need to worry that it will get ruined being exposed to the elements.
Now on the advertising bit online I noticed when I bought it that it said 'easy assembly', well I'm not quite sure who they were kidding but it really is anything but. We are pretty much pro's at building children's toys but this left us scratching our heads for a while. It's fiddly to build more than it is complicated.
Children will definitely find this outdoor toy fun, but would I recommend it? I'm not sure. It's expensive for what it is and the door issue makes it difficult for young children who it is aimed at to get in and out. For my children it was perfect, they are both quite petite for their ages and I bought it when my youngest was probably nearer 2 and a half so was steady on her feet, but then it does make the amount of time they can use it limited as they grow and become too big to fit in. The concept is good and the fact that it allows them to help you around the garden will delight little ones and give them hours of fun with it.
