“ Brand: Mega Bloks / Age: 12 months / Type: Cars & Vehicles „
For Christmas 2007 we received this as a gift for our then 14 month old son. As we had already bought him some Mega Bloks ourselves we were pleased with this extra to add to his collection. Megabloks can be purchased in numerous different quantities and with different themes. The many different products available can be seen on their website www.megabloks.com. The prices quoted on this site are in Canadian Dollars, but items can be found in stores in the UK such as Argos, Woolworths and Toys R Us. The company that produce Mega Bloks are Mega brands. They also produce other items the most well known being Magnetix.
The item I am reviewing is the Lil Cement Truck.
The truck is made from plastic and is coloured a pale grey with an orange cab and black wheels and handle. On the back sits the cement mixer which is essentially a clear blue plastic tub which contains the Mega Bloks. This lifts off so you can play with it seperate from the truck. The truck can be played with as a vehicle as the wheels do move. It is very lightweight and easily carried with the handle on the top. The truck also has a driver. He has a base the same as the Mega Bloks and he has a home in the cab. If he is taken out then a Mega Block can be put there instead. There are also two other 'homes' at the base of the truck. This can be for the man or the Bloks to be placed. The lid that fits on to the mixer is the same orange colour as the cab and has four 'homes for the Bloks to fit.
~*~The bricks themselves~*~
The mixer contains just 15 Bloks of various sizes and colours. These are similar in design to lego. Having the circular bits on the top which fit into the bottom of other bricks. This has the words Mega Bloks written on each one. The bottoms of the bricks are cubes. These particular Mega Bloks are the maxi bloks and so they are a much larger size than lego making them a more suitable choice for younger children. Although Mega Bloks normally come in singles, doubles, threes, fours (either squares or in a straight line) and eights (two lines of four) this is not the case with this set. As the container is only small the majority of them are singles and doubles. The Bloks are different colours, but I can't tell you the exact mix as all our Bloks have got muddled up! I do know there were grey and black bricks in this set mixed with more colourful ones.
The bricks are easily wiped clean and will need to be as they get chewed a lot! They do seem to be durable as we have no damaged bricks so far and my son does like to throw them and bang them together a lot!
These bricks are designed to develop the use of imagination in your children. This leads to social interaction either with parents or siblings as you play together helping your child build or play with the truck. It aids with colour and shape recognition as you encourage your child to pass you the red/square brick etc. It also can help with focus and attention and hand eye coordination as your child learns how the pieces fit together.
As well as building with the Bloks your child also learns how the truck fits together and how it wheels and how to carry it.
We have had this toy for just over a month now. If I take the cement mixer off the back and take the lid off my son will then sit taking the pieces in and out. He also likes to put the lid on and off. He will build Bloks onto the orange lid and also together. He also likes to wheel the mixer along and rattle the mixer as the Bloks move around inside. The bricks are aimed at age 1 plus and at only 15 months his attention span is limited. As he gets a little older I think he will get more use from the Bloks.
The main drawback with this set is the limited number of pieces. As we have some further Bloks this is not a problem but on its own 15 Bloks are not many to build with. The other drawback is that with more Bloks we do struggle to keep them tidy. I have to do a sweep around the house at the end of each day to find all the bits that have wandered! This doesn't bother me too much as this happens with everything that has 'bits' to it!
As this was a gift I am unsure where it was bought from. On the canadian website it is listed as being sold in Woolworths, TK Maxx & TJ Hughes in the UK. I have looked on Woolworths website and it is not listed although it may be in stores. I have found it listed on Amazon at a price of £12.99. It is not on the Argos or ToysRus website although they both stock other Mega Bloks products.
Yes definately. The Bloks are fun, educational and an easy to play with. With the added bonus of a vehicle it is a versatile toy. I think that we will get a fair few years of use from this as my 6 year old son plays with it too!
