A great toy, just not a hit with us
Member Name: baby-cakes
Advantages: great fun, good for imagination
Disadvantages: my daughter isn't keen
My friend gave me a huge bag of Megablocks for my daughter as her son had outgrown them and this was fantastic for two reasons - one being that it was a really lovely gift, and the second being that it meant if my daughter wasn't keen on them it wouldn't be as disappointing as if I had been out and bought them for her. I had been thinking about getting her some blocks to play with as she didn't really have anything like that and when we would visit my friend she would quite often play with this kind of thing.
The set we were given had a large amount of blocks in there, and some have eyes, feet and hands which meant she could make some cool looking figures. Megablocks are made from a good strong plastic and they come in a range of sizes from a single block wide to blocks that are four wide which is great as your child will be able to come up with all kinds of creations! I really like how the blocks are quite chunky so there is absolutely no risk of the child putting them in their mouth and swallowing them, which can happen with other types of blocks. There are a range of colours in the Megablocks range and you will find the primary colours in there which I love as they are bright and also helps to teach the child colours. There are red, yellow, green, blue, orange and white, and even a new range with pinks and pale blues! (I say new, they may have been around a while but I have only just seen them for sale in Argos).
The recommended age for these blocks is 12 months + but I see no reason why a younger child can't play with them as long as they are suitable supervised. I would say that the blocks would last for a good few years, and one of my friends children are 5 and 6 and they still love to play with them.
When I gave the blocks to my daughter she was quite excited and couldn't wait to start building a tower so I left her to play for a while before I got down playing with her. It only took her about 10 minutes until she was fed up on her own so I helped her make a little figure with the picture blocks and that was about as much as she played with them in the building sense, she much preferred to split them into colour groups and count the blocks.
I was a little disappointed that she wasn't into the megablocks as much as I thought she would be as I think they are great for a childs imagination when they are thinking about all the different things they can make. It is safe to say that these definately aren't her favourite kind of thing to play with but she will sometimes get them out and have maybe half an hour with them before moving onto something else. I will keep them in her toy box and maybe when she gets older she may play with them more as I have seen them at the nursery where she will be attending after Christmas so that may bring a new interest in them.
I have previously worked in several nurseries and have found that the blocks are a real hit with most children so I would recommend them, its just not my daughters kind of thing.
You can pick up a 70 piece bag from Argos for £14.99 which is a good price for a start and if they are a hit you can add to them at any time. I like how they come in a plastic bag so they are easily stored and you know they are all kept together! The bag appears to be very strong, although ours don't come in and out of the bag all that often so I can't really comment on how durable it is.
I think I would give the mega blocks four out of five Dooyoo stars!
