Advantages: Bucket to clear them away

Disadvantages: Too few bricks, Different sized bricks, Mr Drum won't shut up

At last my son is reaching the age where I can buy him 'real' toys rather than the all singing- all dancing passive playthings. I noticed that at nursery he is rather partial to building with bricks. I use the term 'building' although in actual fact he just sort of bashes them together but oh how he enjoys it!

I therefore decided to ask a family member to buy him some bricks for his first birthday. He was given some mega bloks inside a bucket. Apparently this is called Mr Drum. The lid can be used for building on but to my horror it talks!

Now here comes my pet hate. I cannot abide these electronic toys that sing and flash lights at children constantly. I much prefer the toys where children actively play. My home is full of toys, usually with American accents, shouting nonsense phrases at my son like 'Let's Go!' What I really, really hate about these toys is that if you don't play with them for a few minutes the damn things pipe up again and scare the living daylights out of you.

Right moan over. Mr Drum shouts out 'It's time to play with Mega Bloks' and then plays a drum roll. Each time a brick is placed on him he reacts with a drum sound. Although you can change the mode and he then drawls out the names of the primary colours. And yes just as Joe has moved on and settled down with another toy, Mr Drum shouts out which distracts his attention from whatever he was doing. If you have a toybox too make sure you put him at the top, otherwise he will be shouting out all the time.

The bricks themselves are easy to handle although there were very few in the bucket. You could never actually make anything out of them and they were of varying sizes too which means you couldn't even build a tower.

The toy costs around £16 which I think is very expensive. My son has played with it and at the moment it is able to meet his needs but as soon as he can actually build with t
he bricks I will need to look at alternatives for him.

The bricks are brightly coloured in primary colours. I like the idea of them belonging in a container and he enjoys putting them away but I would not buy these again I'm afraid.

Thanks for reading.

Thomas loves his mega blocks too - luckily ours came in a big clear bag with no electronic voices!
