      Cute and fun bath toy

The mothercare doggy paddler is a baby / toddler bath toy. Mothercare do not specify an age range but I would put this at 6 months plus for interest and probably 2 years to operate independently.

The toy is a moulded plastic dog which is in the swimming position. It has rotating arms which are activated by a wind up mechanism within the dogs body. When wound up, the arms spin around making the dog move through the water and look like it is doing front crawl. It is around 10-15 cm in length and very light which enables it to float.

Mothercare also sell a froggy paddler but in my opinion the doggy version is much sweeter.

The first positive about this toy is that it is very cute! The dog is yellow and black with green and blue spotted swim shorts on. It has long wars and really reminds me of grommet from the Wallace and grommet films. The other positives are that it has no small parts and ours at least has lasted very well. After 3 years of being dunked and played with almost every day, it still works well.

Mothercare state that this toy helps to develop hand eye coordination and manual dexterity. I wouldn't agree that this is the case with younger toddlers as they are not able to operate it themselves but once older, the winding up action is a useful one for them to learn.

On the negative side, it is too hard for a toddler to wind the toy up so it does need you to constantly set it going. It could also do with the swimming action being a little stronger. The poor dog looks like he is struggling with the swimming!

Apart from these couple of points I would say that this is a good bath toy. It currently sells for £4 at mothercare which I think is pretty reasonable.
