Mothercare Jungle Animal Puzzle
Advantages: Fun and quality toy
Disadvantages: Price may put you off
We received this jungle puzzle, a basic baby jigsaw from Mothercare for my daughter's first birthday. It is ideal because the board is suitable for 12 months plus.
This is a high quality wooden puzzle with little pieces that have a small peg handle in them. There are five animals: giraffe; lion; zebra; elephant and monkey and each is nicely painted and easy to identify.
The puzzle is made a lot easier than other similar wooden jigsaws we have simply because behind the piece is a picture of the animal that is intended to go in that exact shape. This makes it more of an independent toy that our daughter can complete by herself with no assistance. The pegs make it easier to flittle hands to pick up and we enjoy making animal sounds when identifying the pieces (the monkey one is best) but I am not sure what a zebra or giraffe sounds like really!
As it was a present, I am not exactly sure how much this cost but looking at the site, most of this kind of board game retails at around £6. As it is such high quality and well finished I do think it is worth it.
This toy is excellent for coordination skills and fun to play with. It is annoying when some of the pieces go awol for a bit but it's nice to find them again when clearing up everything! We have cheaper versions of this from Asda and they just don't compare in quality. It can be hard to find a suitable present when a baby is turning one (that isn't clothing) so this kind of jigsaw is ideal when you want to encourage learning and interactive play.
I think there is a certain quality around wooden toys for children, although they tend to be a but more expensive they have a nicer feel to them than plastic. The jigsaws are a nice way to entertain your child for a few minutes although I do tend to put it away once we have played with it and made all the different animal sounds to try and keep all the pieces together! My daughter still enjoys playing with this seven months after it was gifted with her so I think it may last a while in the toy box.
Summary: Makes a lovely gift for a baby
