“ Brand: Mothercare / Type: Cuddly Toys „
Sometimes it is the most basic, traditional toys which are the most entertaining and become firm favourites for children and this is true of these ducks. They are nothing particularly special but that does not stop my two year old from adoring them!
Within this set you get 4 ducks which, little B has named Mummy, Daddy, Baby and Little B duck. They are all a different colour; blue, red, yellow and pale green. They are made from quite a soft plastic so that you can squeeze water out of them but not soft enough so that they are actually a squeezable toy- a child would struggle to squeeze them. This is a good density so that your child can also have a good chew on them without being able to cause them to be misshapen.
The ducks are hollow and have a tiny hole in the bottom of them so that they will float on water and any water which is absorbed can be squeezed out afterwards. The bottom of them are flat making it possible for them to stand on the bath side or a window sill when they are not being played with.
Because they float along it looks as though they are swimming. Little B likes to push these along the water and pretend that they are swimming to an exciting venue and has great pleasure in having them jump out of the bath, stand on the side and then take it in turns to jump (well be pushed!) back into the bath! It is all down to her own imagination that these little stories develop and just goes to show that a toy does not need to be anything fancy to be able to create entertainment.
These toys are vibrant colours. If your child is afraid of bath time then these will help to coax them in, who wouldn't want to have a splash in the bath along with such cute and friendly looking ducks? When Little B was younger she used to just hold the ducks and study them, perhaps give one a little gnaw but now she plays with these properly and it's great to see how they have remained a part of her bath time routine throughout her life. We even have a set at Grandma's house so that she can play with them there too when she is bathed.
The ducks can help to educate your child a little too as you can teach them the different colours, the noises that a duck makes and introduce concepts such as floating, swimming and jumping.
A lot of bath toys go mouldy and gather germs but these have remained in good condition throughout because we have always made sure we squirt out any water after each bath and keep them away from the water so they don't sit in water which would then lead to mould. I think they cost £5 for the pack and considering they have lasted well over 2 years I think that makes them very good value for money indeed!
They can be purchased from The Early Learning Centre which is often found inside a Mothercare store. Thumbs up from us!
WHAT IS IT?
A set of 4 rubber ducks for the bath.
WHAT I THINK
I bought these ducks about 3 years ago and paid £5 for them, I thought that was good for 4 ducks and makes them £1.25 each. I was surprised at how small they are because the photograph on the Mothercare website makes them look a lot bigger. The ducks are only about 7cm high and that is not very big and they get lost in the bubbles when my daughters have a bath. They are made of rubber and in the set you get blue, red, yellow and green ducks. They feel quite heavy for the small size of them and make a big splash when they are thrown in the water.
They do not float properly and tip either on their sides or completely upside down. This was very frustrating for my daughter because she has always liked ducks and I bought these special for her to play with in the bath, she spent a lot of time trying to float them upright but it's like their heads are too big because they tip over as soon as they go into the bath water. Three of them also developed black mold inside even though I washed and dried them thoroughly after my daughter had played with them in the bath. I could not get rid of this mold so have thrown 3 of the ducks away in the last year and my daughter has only got the blue one now. I would have thought better of Mothercare than this and am glad I didn't pay more for them, the remaining blue duck does not go into the bath anymore and I keep it as an ornament on the bathroom shelf.
When you have got the full set they look bright and colourful together and I wish I had put them on display as soon as I realised they didn't float properly because they have been a bit of a waste. They have not been very good as ducks for the bath and other ones I have bought since have worked a lot better for my daughter and I have been happy to buy her others even though they have been more expensive.
When I bought these ducks they were £5 but they are half this price now. I still do not suggest you buy them though because they do not do what they are supposed to and that black mold was a worry to me. They are available only in Mothercare.
