Mothercare Winnie the Pooh Blankie
Advantages: Soft material, unisex, makes noise
Disadvantages: My daughter didn't like it! Bit pricey.
When our daughter was born, we were lucky enough to get lots of presents for her. This Blankie was one of the presents we got. She had it when she was first born.
The Mothercare Winnie the Pooh Blankie is a small almost triangular piece of creamfabric attached to a plastic ring. The Blankie itself is a soft, almost velvety, material with a classic Winnie the Pooh design stitched onto it. The design is of Pooh and Piglet holding balloons being lifted into the air with the words 'It's a grand sort of day for playing' stitched underneath. Under that on the blankie, there is a row of thick, red stitching going the whole way along the blankie. Slightly under that is a green rougher material and then right on the edge is a thin silky strip of material. The care label is attached to the right edge of the blankie.
Attached securely to the smaller end of the blankie is a clear plastic ring which contains 8 small balls alternating between brown and cream. This can be used as a teether or a rattle by the baby. It is suitable for baby's from birth and the label states that it can be machine washed.
We gave this to my daughter on several occassions when she was young but she really never showed any interest in it. I tried sleeping with it to give it my scent, I tried putting it in her car seat, but all she did was throw it out and play with her octopus instead. As she got a bit older, she enjoyed sliding the ring up her arm and shaking the ring to make a noise, but it never gave her any comfort or much enjoyment as a baby. I've therefore only given it 4 stars as despite it being a lovely toy, my daughter just wouldn't play with it.
I thought it was a big shame that she didn't play with this item as I think it was a lovely present. It is well made and contains things that most babies should enjoy - teething ring, soft blanket and noise. She did sometimes like it if I shook it for her as it then encouraged her to grab for it, therefore developing hand-eye co-ordination. I washed it once and it came out okay but I cannot say what long-term effect washing would have on it as she never made it very dirty!
Despite my fussy daughter not playing with this toy, I would still recommend it as a classic present to buy a newborn. It is a bit pricey at £10, but I have found a lot of Mothercare items to be like this. It is of a good quality and being Winnie the Pooh and cream, it is fine for girls or boys. The soft materials should make it comforting for them to cuddle and the plastic ring could be useful as they develop teeth. I think it would be suitable for up to about 6 months, or longer if they actually develop an attachment to it.
Summary: Recommended as a baby present
