For some totally unknown reason a family member decided this would be a good present for my youngest daughter for Christmas last year, considering she was 15 months old and they are for ages 3 and up due to choking hazard I don't understand giving them as a gift but my elder daughter has got plenty of use out of them.
I have no idea where these came from although I have found them on Amazon so they are available to buy. The beads come in a plastic tub with a screw top lid on and a handle on the lid so they can be carried around. Inside the tub there are 2 long pieces of lace and then there are 30 wooden pieces. There are 6 different shapes, circular nearly flat beads, egg timer shaped beads, cones, semi circles, cubes and a double coned shape so it's pointed on each side.
The beads are very colourful in orange, red, blue, yellow, green and purple. The beads are a good size being about 1 to 1 ½ inches each which means little hands will be able to handle them easily and the holes in them are big enough so that the lace goes through easily which again is great for small fingers.
My elder daughter has been playing with these and loves stringing them up and making them into necklaces although it makes a really bulky necklace and the laces are not long enough so that you could tie the ends and place over your head. When she was doing about Peter patterns at school we sat with these beads and made lots of patterns which helped her quite a lot in how to make a pattern. My younger daughter is not far off 2 year old and although they still are not advised for her age we have started sitting with her and sorting the colours, she prefers to try and build towers with them which doesn't work very well.
I like the basic style toys and this is no exception, things like this were around when I was young and I think it shows just how good basic toys like this are when you can still buy the same idea now 20 odd years later. The beads will be played with for a couple of years yet and help with fine motor skills, sorting, shapes and colours. The shapes are stained with the colours rather than being painted so although I wouldn't encourage anyone to let their child put them in their mouths if they did the paints isn't going to be flaking off into their mouths.
These beads are a good size, great quality and very durable so I would recommend them they are certainly much better than similar things I have seen on the high street.
Make a necklace, a bracelet or anything you fancy with these lacing beads. Great for hand eye co-ordination and motor skills.
