Playgro Toy Box Activity Rattle Clip Clop
Advantages: Entertaining, textures colours and noises, lots of features, nice looking
Disadvantages: Hard to clean
When my son was about four months old we went to stay with my Grandmother. She had very kindly bought him the Playgro Toy Box Activity Rattle Clip Clop which is essentially a donkey rattle. Playgro was not a brand I had previously come across so I was interested to see what the toy was like and if my son would like it.
- Clip Clop Donkey -
The body and head of Clip Clop donkey, as we call him, is a soft cuddly toy. He is blue in colour with a big peachy coloured face and a huge smile. His mane is made from small pieces of beige cord-like material. The tail is two little loops of ribbon, one black and white and the other orange and yellow. He has a green saddle bag which says "Clip Clop" on it. This can be lifted to reveal a bear's face; perhaps Clip Clop Donkey carries his teddy in his saddle bag? The donkey has four legs which are made from soft thin blue material so they are very flexible. Each hoof has a different design. One is made from soft orange and red materials with black and white edging. This contains a bell that jingles when the foot moves. Another is made from soft green and blue materials with a patterned green edging. This contains a crackly material which crackles when you touch it. The third hoof is made from hard plastic, red at the bottom with little nobbles and then the rest is see through so that you can see the multi coloured beads inside. These rattle when the donkey is shaken. The last hoof is also made from hard plastic, yellow on the bottom with a mirror and then the rest is see through so you can see the multi coloured beads inside. Again these rattle when the donkey is shaken. Attached to the donkey's back is a plastic green loop which has three brightly coloured beads attached to it. These can be twisted and moved along the loop. The overall look is cute, fun and it appears to have lots to entertain a baby with.
- Playing with Clip Clop Donkey -
The first thing we did with the donkey was attach it onto the gym bar of our play mat. The loop on its back allowed us to easily do this and it made a nice addition to the play mat. While lying on his back looking up at the donkey my son could easily tap and grab hold of the donkey's feet and he really enjoyed doing this. We also "clip clopped" the donkey around in front of him and he loved holding the donkey himself, shaking, sucking and dropping it. The different noises, colours and textures really appealed to him and for such a small toy (only about 10 cm high) there is certainly lots to keep baby entertained. It soon became a toy that we would take out with us as it fit easily into the changing bag. Clip Clop donkey kept my son entertained until he was about seven months old, at which time he became more interested in larger toys that needed batteries. The donkey is still in his toy box and he will play with it occasionally.
- Cleaning and Durability -
As the donkey is made from plastic and soft material it is not obvious what the best way to clean it is. I have wiped it down which seems to have been sufficient as it hasn't got very dirty. I'm not sure if it would be ok in the washing machine or a steriliser. I think this is the downside to toys made from plastic and soft material. The rattle has worn well and has survived being thrown about and dropped on the floor numerous times.
- Age Range -
This rattle is recommended from 0+. Although there is no reason why the donkey is not suitable from birth, I don't think my son would have shown any interest in a toy like this before around two months. Also the donkey is larger than some other rattles we have and I think it might be hard for a baby to hold this themselves until they are around three months. It was a firm favourite until my son was about seven months so you can get a few months of use out of this.
- Price and Availability -
We received this as a gift so I'm not sure how much it cost but I can see on Amazon it retails at £12.48 including postage and on Kiddicare.com it costs £7.89 which doesn't include postage. I don't think I would pay over £10 for this toy as there are plenty other nice rattles available for under £10 but if you can get it at this price I do think this is a particularly enjoyable rattle.
- Would I Recommend? -
I would definitely recommend Clip Clop donkey, especially if you can find one for under £10. My son has had a lot of enjoyment from this toy and I will definitely keep it for any children we have in the future.
Summary: A lovely donkey rattle that was a favourite with my son
