Having grown up with Silvercross Prams and with our first child we decided to invest in a Silvercross Pram, I discovered that Silvercross also did a range of toys know as the "Home Grown Range". I liked the toys as they co-ordinated well with our pram and seemed to be well made.
Bertha Bird was one of our purchases as we had the Silvercross Ventura car seat a twirly toy just didn't work as whilst our baby is in the car seat the handle is right up against the rear car seat that he cannot quite reach and defeats the main point of it dangling in front of him.
I decided upon Bertha Bird as it could be hung from the car seat handle or also from the headrest of the passenger seat, offering me a bit more flexibility for baby.
The homegrown range is based on garden animals and vegetables and the main characters are;
Rufus the Rabbit
Bertha bird is suitable from birth and comes complete with an adjustable strap allowing it to be hung from various objects, as the strap is adjustable it can be hung at the right height for baby to be able to reach and play with.
Bertha makes a beautiful chirping sound when shook lightly or when Bertha bobs up and down, Silvercross claim that this encourages listening skills and is one of the key selling points of the toy.
A small mirror is also on the bird and this seems to keep baby occupied as he tries to focus on the mirror and the reflections that he can see, it really keeps him occupied during the car journey.
The corduroy legs move through the bird but baby finds this a little bit of a struggle to do at the moment and he just uses the legs to get a good grip of the bird as she dangles down in front of him, as the strap allows the bird to hang down he enjoys batting this backwards and forwards.
As far as a travel toy goes this certainly has done its job for the first few months but as he gets older I am sure we will have to upgrade to something a little more entertaining.
I purchased this item from John Lewis at the retail price of £7.00 which I suppose is quite reasonable for a branded toy but I do wish it offered a bit more for baby than a mirror and a tweeting noise.
The bird is well padded and can be wiped clean from any spillages. My little boy seems to love this little bird even though it doesn't appear to do all that much but it is so rewarding to dangle it and allow him to hear the chirping noise and see his little smile.
I can't say I regret this purchase as I don't, but I do wish I had researched a bit more into other products on the market that may offer more stimulation for baby.
