Tesco Instrument Set
Advantages: Fun and educational
Disadvantages: Lots of noise!
My son loves music. Froma an early age we have atteneded a music group as well as a signing group, plus others and they all revolve around music. There is research to suggest that music, including singing and playing instruments is a valuable learning experience for young children, developing all learning areas, language and literacy, mathematical skills, social skills, physical development etc, and so when he was given this set of instruments last Christmas at the age of 11 months we were delighted as he could now sho off to the extended family his musical talents, as of course my child is going to be the next Tchaikovsky!
There are 5 instruments in this set and they can all be stored neatly away inside the drum which has a removeable lid. In side you will find two drum sticks, a maracca, a tambourine, a xylophone and a clacker.
They are recommended from the age of 18mths so if you do purchase for a younger child please be aware of this, though in saying that as I said before my son was 11months when he had these as a Christmas presents and we have had no problems at all.
The drum is a good size and can be played with teh drum sticks provided or with your childs hands or in many cases when children are learning and exploring tehy will play the drum with anything just to see what sound it makes, this is good and do encourage this activity (of course not with your best china ornaments though)!
All of the other instruments are easy to hold with a good sized handle. All of the intruments are made of plastic and so are relatively robust, but it is adviseable to not allow your child to bang them on a concrete or similar flooring in case they do break. There are no cracks of any sort on any of my sons instruments yet and he certainly likes to bang them on anything he can find. This goes to show that they are durable instruments that are designed to get a bit of a battering!
This is a good set of starter instruments and will last until around teh age of 3-4, maybe longer. They cost £8.97 last Christmas (2007) from Tesco.
Summary: Great starter set of instruments
