Advantages: Great value set, stimulates the imagination
Disadvantages: stations, sheds etc are plain compared to Brio, but otherwise none
Timmy’s Train Set is a wooden system, almost identical to Brio. It is fully compatible with all makes of wooden train set, including Brio, Tesco and the Early Learning Centre.
Having decided to buy our son a wooden set for christmas, I did some research into Brio and the alternatives (and reading opinions here at DooYoo!). I found that although Brio was excellent, it was also very very expensive. After searching through many catalogues, internet sites etc, I came across Timmy’s Train Set in the Urchin catalogue (www.urchin.co.uk), but I'm sure you can get it in other places too, I heard that Mothercare used to do it, but whether they do now I don't know.
For £75, you get an extremely large layout, which consists of lots of (to numerous to count!) pieces of straight and curved track, 2 turntables, tunnel, bridge, engine shed, 2 stations, crossover pieces, points, and 2 engines and carriages as well as other small pieces. Many different layout’s can be made, just let your imagination run wild! We had the whole set laid out on christmas day, and it covered our living room floor to a size of about 6ft by 6ft! I’m trying to get across the size of this set and what excellent value it is. The same layout in Brio would cost at least twice as much, and you honestly cannot tell the difference between this set and Brio.
It also comes in a lovely wooden storage box.
However, with it being a great value set, the tunnel and stations are quite plain, so we plan to add bits of other makes into it, for birthdays and Christmas etc. This is the great things about all wooden railways, you can just keep adding on!! But for a starter set, I rate Timmy’s very highly indeed. My almost three year old has not stopped playing with it since Christmas!!
