Tommee Tippee Smiley Face Mirror
Advantages: Strong well designed brightly coloured teething toy
Disadvantages: Baby can clonk his/her head when holding this when flapping arms
I volunteer for Homestart so I not only have my grand daughter two days a week but I also visit my Homestart family who have twins every week. I have been seeing this family since the twins we six weeks old so have got to know their toys pretty well.
There are a number of well known and recognized brands for young pre school children and one if these is Tommee Tippee who also make the famous sippy cups! The toy I am reviewing today is one that the twins loved when they were younger and my grand daughter also had as she inherited it from her older cousins. It has had good use from three families that I know well, two daughters and the Homestart family although it is popular for a limited time as babies develop and change so quickly.
The toy is a very simple teething toy with a wonderful brightly coloured smiley face on one side and a baby safe mirror on the reverse. It is also very safe with lots of chewability and has a simple rattle as well. It is made of good quality safe plastic that will not crack or shatter no matter how many times it is dropped or thrown which is essential for any baby toy as any mother or father of young children knows toys get dropped a lot.
Another safety plus is that there are no small parts nor sharp bits and there is nothing that can come off and cause a problem so it has been well designed and has passed all the safety standards for babies' toys sold in this country so you can purchase this with confidence for any young baby.
It is a lovely looking little toy as there is the lovely bright smiling face which encourages babies to smile back. Somehow it even encourages adults to smile too when playing with babies, or that could be the baby too I guess! The mirror on the reverse allows baby to see him or herself and smile at the refection. It helps to gain a sense of self and also provides a moving changing 'picture' for baby to enjoy. The colours used on the toy are lovely and bright. The face is bright yellow and the handles blue and slightly more rubberized than the face. The smile is huge and red with red spots at either end as big as the rounded sticky out red nose. The eyes are flat but within the inside they can move and are simple black within white so they really stand out well.
This toy is an excellent present to give a new baby as they will grown into it and makes a change from all he clothes that they get given . It won't get much use for the first month or so but as soon as baby can grip then they can grab the handles at side and flap them. Unfortunately this can sometimes mean they clonk themselves on the head but that can happen with any toy at this hand flapping stage.
The handles on the side are not only perfectly designed for little hands to grab as they are rubbery and not slippery( until slobbered on of course) but they are also perfectly designed for chewing when teething or just for putting into mouths when going through the stage of 'everything in the mouth'. The mirror on the back can get pretty covered in slobber but luckily it is so easy to wash and return the mirror and the rest of the toy to its original shiny state.
For cleaning you can just wash it in washing up liquid, the anti bacterial sort is good as it does kill ay nasties that may be lurking. When baby is very young it can also be put in the sterilizing water using the sterilizing tablets in a bowl. I used to do this once a week when mine we little with all their plastic hard chewed on toys and suggested it to both my daughters when they had their children.
The lovely bright red nose in the middle of the smiley face is very attractive to babies because it stands out really well and feels smooth and round. It also makes a nice, not too loud, squeak when you push it. It does take some pushing from a little one but can be pushed by an adult or older child to entertain a young baby. The nose sticking out a bit on the smiley face is also attractive to try and suck and of course being rounded is perfectly safe once again.
The eyes are big and really obvious, a bit like a child's drawing of a face, really simple and clear. They also wobble around if you shake the toy and if you shake it you get a rattling sound too. None of the noises are loud but just enough to get a child's attention rather than deafen them or annoy the adults. So as baby flaps his/her arms then a very satisfying rattle can be heard and the more they flap the more rattle is heard. This reward encourages flapping which helps improve co-ordination and they are also learning that they can make something happen.
This toy is designed to be held by very young babies as soon as they cab grip so it isn't big or heavy at all. I would say it is the size of my hand outstretched. Despite the fact it feels very light to us it is quite big and heavy for a tiny baby so has at times caused a rather nasty surprise as it lands on their head when their little arms can't co-ordinate well. Luckily falling from that height doesn't cause much damage but is a bit of a shock to baby so expect tears if it happens. This is also a learning experience and helps baby learn to control movements in time. They fact that it is quite small means that you can pop it into your bag or the pram or even attach it to the car seat or pram with a short piece of ribbon if you want. Do not allow too long a piece as the child could wrap it around their neck, You just want it long enough so baby can have it passed back to them if dropped and it hasn't got onto the floor to get dirty.
I have seen this in shops selling quality baby toys such as Boots ,Mothercare or Early Learning Centre and it is less than a fiver so not an major investment so a perfect 'Welcome Baby' gift.
This is a well designed, strong safe toy which encourages co-ordination, helps with the chewing and mouthing stage and provides simple entertainmen for bay with its bright colours and simple rattle sound, wobbly eyes and nice red nose. Once baby is a bit older he /she will love making faces in the mirror on the back too. It is easily washable and pretty well indestructible too.
I would say this is a great little toy which looks very simple but is actually very cleverly thought out and safe toy and teething aid that will still entertain a child from time to time once they are a bit older as mirrors are appealing to children for quite some time as they love to watch themselves make faces.
Thanks for reading. This review may be posted on other sites under my same user name.
