We all want to do the best by our children and encourage them as much as possible, so if you’re anything like me you spend way too much money on toys that will stimulate your child and help them to learn. Every time they take that next step it’s a wonderful feeling and it doesn’t matter if your child is early or late doing it according to the so-called ‘norm’ it’s just magic.

So naturally I really love any toy that encourages hand to eye coordination and puzzle solving, so when I saw the Tomy shape sorter I rushed out and got one for my daughter. It is shaped like a sink u-bend and has two sides, one with a rubber surface that has be cut into many triangles so that toys can be just pushed in and pulled out again, and the other has three holes for shapes to fit through. It comes with 4 balls, 4 pyramids, and 4 cubes. The cubes and pyramids are equal on all sides which makes it very easy to put them into the holes, and the holes themselves are just a bit bigger than the shape which means no force is needed to get them in. You remove the top of one side to empty the shapes out.

This toy is recommended from 6mths+ but I started with the rubber end when my daughter was only 4 ½ mths. I would put the shape most of the way in and she would hit it so it went in then I would cheer and clap (two of the things that she loves most now). Around 6 mths she started doing it herself if I gave her a shape and at 8mths she surprised the daylights out of me by putting the shapes in the holes on the other side.

She finds the pyramid and the ball a doddle but has a little more trouble with the cube, and she always looks up for an expectant clap and cheer! I love everything about it but I think the things I’ve found most useful are the two different sides for different stages in development and the fact it isn’t over complicated by too many different shapes.

Tescos are selling these for just over £4 at the moment which I think is brilliant value. We bought one for my daughter a couple of weeks ago as the other shape sorter that we have is much too difficult. This is much easier, only having 3 different shapes, and so gives her confidence.
