We first saw this ball at a friends house, where their 4 year old son plays with it regularly. Our daughter, who was seven months old at the time had a happy time comparing two balls, one that made no noise, and one that honked, squeaked and booped every time she bashed it. There was no doubt which one she preferred. So what is a “Happy Sounds Ball”? It looks at fist sight like a tiny beach ball (about 15cm diameter) with the multi-coloured panels. Closer inspection reveals it is made of material-stuffed leather(?) and has a small cut-away section of diameter around 5cm. That cut-away section contains the speaker for the electronic wizadry inside. Whenever the ball is jogged it emits a noise. There are at least ten querky sounds that are made in random order. That is all there is to it really, simple but effective. Because the sounds are only made when the ball is jogged, a gentle throw is silent, but the catch makes a sound. Also a small baby bashing it elicits a parp or swish every time. Our friends have had the ball for years. It is now used to kick around and play catch. Their ball still looks brand new, so it obviously lasts well. They have never changed the batteries either. The mechanism can removed from the ball with some effort by an adult. I think an older child could get it out, but it is attached to the ball by a cord, and the battery compartment is screwed shut. You would remove the mechanism to replace the batteries or switch it off. We switch it off in the car rather than hear weird noises from the boot every time we go over a bump. The batteries look like they will be two or three little silver camera batteries, but I have not yet investigated. Judging by our friends experience they last a long time. My only complaint about the ball is getting hold of it! We tried some shops with, no joy. Then on the internet we had an order with an on-line retailer which they couldn’t fulfil because it never came
in to stock. Finally mothercare.co.uk’s web site came up trumps after their mail order had none in stock. Our daughter loves the ball, and crawls over to it, gives it a few whacks then goes off to something else before giving it a few more whacks. I love the ball too; I give it a kick every time it is in range!
